You'd think maybe they'd find dealers who would be willing to provide
title services as a donation-in-kind. Tax writeoff for the dealer, plus
goodwill. More $$$ for the charity. Maybe not enough kind-hearted
dealers around?

On the other hand if the charity is volunteer-run, it sort of makes
sense to keep the workload to a minimum, otherwise you lose volunteers.

Which brings us back to government/charity think: free money beats no
money.

About 20 years ago, a local fire chief signed a contract with
telemarketers.
The telemarketers did all the work, and at the end of the campaign
they'd cut a check to the FD for 4% of the gross. Which was all well and
good, until the details became public, and the average working stiff was
quite irate to learn that giving $100 of hard earned cash to the FD
meant flushing $96 down the tube from their point of view.

There was some sort of charity outfit in Houston that would get donated cars
and have a live auction once a month at a lot they had in a fairly rough part
of town. I went to a couple just for grins. Some of the cars were total junk,
others not too bad. I remember some kid and his mother were there once and
bought a half-decent 300SD for $800, the kid was ecstatic. It was a reasonable
deal at the time. Another one I remember was a clapped-out Vega 2 ol boys
bought to make a dragster, it went for some fairly big money, like $2k if I
recall but they were happy with the deal.

The auctions lasted a year or two then faded away, no idea what happened to the
organization.

My local NPR station has a guy that coordinates these donations. That is, he

The sovereign citizen stuff gets caught in our data loss prevention system, so
I’ll see it when it hits the fence. It’s amazing to read and doesn’t seem to be
totally crazy until you read and parse the whole thing. My Mom got caught up in
this garbage years ago and was convinced that she wouldn’t have to pay taxes if
she claimed to be a sovereign citizen. It was silly to think, as she was
retired and probably paid little to nothing in taxes to begin with.

Fortunately, my brother, a commercial banker who also took care of her
financials, convinced her it would be a very bad idea for her to pursue this.
She backed off.

The app gives you the ability to remove or delete “trips” that it records. For
instance, if you’re not driving, you can tell it you’re not.

You can also disable the app’s ability to phone home, too, if you want.

Why do I use it? Because I get a significant discount with it, like
20%. When your insurance costs exceed $3k/year for two cars, ten bucks
is ten bucks, as Geddy Lee says. I vetted the app and found that it’s
pretty innocuous for the most part, relying primarily on the
accelerometer to determine braking, acceleration and speed. Those are
the biggies.

That's my favorite part. If you stop for a yellow light and check your
scorecard afterward, they ding you for a 'hard stop'. If you sail
through as or slightly after the light turns red, your insurance score
is better.

They don’t appear to be getting any sort of location information from what I

As long as you don’t exceed 80 mph, change lanes rapidly, or jam on your
brakes, you’re good. In other words, Mrs. Dan DOES NOT have this app on her
phone.

My biggest gripe about it? It’s horribly inefficient and sucks battery power.
I’ve given feedback about it in this regard, and received notifications that
they’re aware of this and working to make it less of a drain. When I was
recently up in Indiana for four days I turned it off. Yeah, I was driving on
occasion, but I also didn’t want to have to have my phone on a charger the
whole time, either.

If the discount wasn’t as significant I wouldn’t bother with it. Sometimes you
have to balance security with benefits. In this case I’ll take the money and
let them look over my shoulder.

Especially when it is a euro version. A 107 280SL will outrun the us
versions of the 350, 450, 380, and possibly the 560 in american trim.
Yuro M110 is a hot engine. (for its day) It is not a 2.3 cosworth as
in the 190E 2.3-16, but it is NOT shabby.

A us version 300SEL is not far from a 200D automatic

It was drilled into our heads in the 60s and 70s: the fallicy, "there's
no replacement for displacement" My first foray into German cars showed
me different, and even before that, in HS, a guy had a Fiat Abarth that
caused may stories to be told. That Abarth was what? maybe 1200cc no
more than 1600.

The Nikola truck is supposed to get "free fuel" from Nikola Motor

At least that's their plan. Solar to get the hydrogen, hydrogen

So "no emissions" - except for manufacturing, like tires, steel,
lubricating oils, paint, transportation for all of the above.

Sure and there are no losses from transmission. The thing is that the greenies
want "no tailpipe emissions" to equal "no emissions" which they don't.
I had a huge argument once where my side of the argument was just me repeating
"where does the hydrogen come from" over and over. My opponent had no answer,
he had no idea where hydrogen came from for powering a fuel cell...
Last time I looked into it, which would have been maybe 2 years ago, the best
report I could find was that electrolysis to get hydrogen was something like
20% efficient.

Precisely. Hydrogen is not an energy source (unless you live on the sun).
Hydrogen is an energy storage medium (and a troublesome one at that).

weight. If you're carrying a ton of fuel and two tons of

limited by law.

Yup. That the reason for aluminum wheels the wide base tires
instead of duals.

Aluminum can save about 30 lb., which is over 500 lbs saving for a
tractor-trailer combination. 1/4 ton - but enough that most road
trucks bother.

A single wide base tire and wheel assembly weighs about 300 lbs
less than a typical dual wheel assembly resulting in about 2400 lb
savings for the whole combination. Some drives say the wide base
ride better than duals. The down-side to the wide base tires is
the lack of redundancy, considerable expense in retrofitting.

With any of these weight savings, it's the bulk hauling that makes
the best use because it's easy to add just a few more pounds.
With packaged freight, it's hard to add one more package to each
pallet after the loads been made up.

Even with the truck at less than weight capacity, fuel use goes
down as the weight goes down so even packaged freight can see some
savings from less weight even if revenue doesn't go up.

It was indeed the fabric, and the nitrocellulose/aluminum powder/iron
oxide dope (thermite with a fuse, so to speak). The Deutchland was
immediately grounded and the entire covering removed and replaced
before she flew again (on the South American route) for this very
reason.

Needless to say, the Nazis didn't bother to tell anyone else what
happened, mostly for liability reasons. Painting an airship with
something that can be ignited by a spark (or even a tear in the
fabric) isn't too smart.

On top of the flammability, the individual panels of linen fabric were
NOT grounded together with conductive thread, so the static discharge
to the ground line caused a spark somewhere in the tail that ignited
some of the linen panels. Fire spread from the tail forward, as you
can see from the films of the event.

Naturally, thermite (iron oxide and aluminum powder) burns HOT -- a
family friend of ours worked for the railroad immediately before WWII
and used it to weld railroad rails together. Leaves molten iron as
"ash".

History Detectives did a piece on this, if you ignore the theatrics
it's quite interesting.

With its electric drivetrain, Nikola One can apply power and
braking to wheels 15 times faster than diesel-powered trucks and
is 2,000 pounds lighter. Steering and handling is improved by a
torque vectoring system that controls the speed of every wheel.

Payload capacity is everything in a semi tractor.
They're paying you to haul their freight, not your own vehicle weight.
If you're carrying a ton of fuel and two tons of batteries, you're
throwing away

payload because total weight is limited by law.

will run on liquid hydrogen?
Will it be continuously boiling off in a giant Dewar flask?
