engine for the economy. I've seen a few around in the $3000 range with high
mileage, which doesn't scare me.

Budget appears to dictate mid to early 90s, but later is always better. That
avoids things like evaporators and wiring harnesses.

Why not? 'Totaled' means total (economic) loss. All it requires
is that the cost of repairs exceed the value of the car.
