On my '83 300D there is piece of formed aluminum rivetted into the top of
the valve cover which forms a blind tunnel open at the back. It looks like
it was embedded with silicone rubber when it was built although that could
have added later by a mechanic.
I remember something about sealing
I believe it's to reduce the amount of oil going into the breather
tube that goes to the air cleaner. There was a dealer fix years ago
that involved using RTV to seal up the gaps there.
The oil filler cap has a gasket and if it's leaking it needs to be

It's an oil trap. Replace the filler cap, it's good for about a
quart in 1000 miles if it's leaking, as it surely is unless it's less
than 4 years old. Replace the fuel filler cap, too, same condition
-- dead rubber seal.

does anyone out there have the procedure saved which they can send me
