Re: [MBZ] '87 300 SDL Axle Assembly
I actually have a set of factory-style half shaft boot kit somewhere in my parts bin but installation isn't simple if you do it by the book. There is a tool that stretches the boot for easy installation without disassembling the cans. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEKY0uFlBpc Start about minute into the video. I don't know if the tool works with MBZ factory boots (doubt it) or if the associated boots are good quality. Factory MBZ boots are quite thick compared to Jap and US CV boots. But you are right. If dirt gets into the joint or the joint is run dry the basic joint is ruined. > -Original Message- > From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of > Curly McLain via Mercedes > Sent: Sunday, January 31, 2016 7:45 PM > To: Mercedes Discussion List <mercedes@okiebenz.com> > Cc: Curly McLain <126die...@gmail.com> > Subject: Re: [MBZ] '87 300 SDL Axle Assembly > > >Not at this time. Re: [MBZ] '87 300 SDL Axle Assembly
Not at this time. I need to do flex disks and the center bearing carrier first. Also, despite boot cracks, may half axles still aren't leaking or torn. Back then (10+ years ago), Rusty convinced me to leave the half axles alone until the boots tore or leaked or I got vibration. So half axles are still a job for another year. But thanks for the offer. Someone sold a kit and an expander to put new boots on. Re: [MBZ] '87 300 SDL Axle Assembly
Unless it's leaking oil or making noise, don't mess with it. It's normal to develop deep cracks in the boots long before actual failure. New half axles were very expensive 10 years ago when I last needed one. Back then, remans were questionable because many failed quite quickly. Back then the conventional wisdom was that a junk-yard part was better than most remans. Hopefully someone here (or on PeachParts?) has current info. You probably have the version with flanges on the differential so the differential doesn't need to be drained and opened. It's not a really hard job either way but (if you replace it) but get a good part so you only have to do it once. > -Original Message- > From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of > Ralph Robertson via Mercedes > Sent: Saturday, January 30, 2016 3:14 PM > To: Mercedes Discussion List <mercedes@okiebenz.com> > Cc: Ralph Robertson <rare...@gmail.com> > Subject: [MBZ] '87 300 SDL Axle Assembly > > I was advised by my mechanic that I need an axle assembly.
