If at the end of the month the percent was low enough, money was paid to the driver. If it was fair-to-middln' - no action. Too high - trouble for the driver. The values were sensible. When moving to Michigan from Illinois many years ago, I once made the 300 mile trip 3 times in one day. On the 3rd leg, I just wanted to get where I was going ASAP, so I drove as fast as possible, consistent with not getting a ticket. In 300 miles, I probably got passed 10-20 times, but there were two vehicles that blew past me. #1 was on the outskirts of Kalamazoo during rush hour, young black woman with the wheel in her left hand and a mascara brush (!) in her right hand. This was 1993, so not many people had cell phones. #2 was a semi about 50-60 miles south of Chicago. I decided to follow him, thinking that with a big truck driving like that no cop would mess with my car. I sped up, going as fast as I was willing to go, ran the needle off my speedo, probably about 95mph, and the truck walked away from me going up a hill. I could have kept up with him, but I had zero desire to go over 100mph in the dark, even with 100W bulbs in my 6x8 Hellas. I don't know what's more surprising, that a semi can go up a hill at over 100mph empty, or that anybody would want to do it. There was a utube video a while back that had the Smart and a MB sedan plough into each other at speed. I think the Smart's safety cage design is similar to that which is found on my Vanagon. Both vehicles are deceptively vulnerable looking, yet have rigid structures that utilize the other car's crumple zones for protection. Frontal impacts into solid stationary objects are their achilles heel. http://www.vanagon.com/info/safety/volvo-crash/index.html On Jan 21, 2008 9:14 AM, Rich Thomas <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Around here they are either bleached blond women or bros/vatos with > twennytoos or twennyfos, neither group paying much attention to anyone > else. > > The Motorweek show yesterday had a test of a Smart, stressed the safety > cage aspect of the thing (it had some name, after some designer) and the > airbags it had. Maybe they were trying to squeeze out another couple of MPG by driving 55. Allan -- 1983 300D 1966 230 "E M" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > We have lots of Smarts around here. Re: [MBZ] (Not so) Smart
We have lots of Smarts around here. They have no problem keeping up at 75mph on the highway, and no problems getting to 75 either. Driving at 60-70, I've had more than a few zip by me. :-) Ed 300E On 21/01/2008, R A Bennell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Maybe they just couldn't keep up. > > Randy > > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Jim Cathey > Sent: Monday, January 21, 2008 10:48 AM > To: Mercedes Discussion List > Subject: [MBZ] (Not so) Smart > > > So we were on a road trip in the greater Seattle area this > weekend, and got trapped in a line of traffic going particularly > slowly on the 2-lane highway through Fort Lewis to Roy. You're still far more likely to encounter smug SUV-bastards bitching about the high price of gas while chatting on cell phones 'round these parts--the stoopid jerks. >From what I've seen in crash test videos, the Smart's are surprisingly tough little cars. [MBZ] (Not so) Smart
So we were on a road trip in the greater Seattle area this weekend, and got trapped in a line of traffic going particularly slowly on the 2-lane highway through Fort Lewis to Roy. Once we reached the main road it was possible to find out what the holdup was, and it turned out to be a Smart. Weird looking, the first time I've seen one in person. Apparently not up to going even 55 mph with two people in them. Looks like a deathtrap. We ended up in front of them at the light so I got a good look at the front. At the next light they hung well back, perhaps four car lengths. Apparently they don't like following old diesels. (We were in the infamous Chicken Wagon.)
