They don't like having lawn mowers driven over their ground nests either.
If it's a riding mower, you'll find out, in spades, on your next pass.

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** RE: PSA from Okie Acres Home Remodelers

2020-09-08 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Here's a related PSA:

Anyone repairing bobwire fences, before hammering a new staple into the
fencepost, check the ground at the base of the post for a yellow jacket nest.
They do not like the vibrations caused by the hammering, and will announce
their displeasure in a painful way.

While working on the cursed Focus alternator replacement (successful,
finally) I failed to notice a nest of yellow jackets in the ground
behind my work area. This is the time of year that they seem to be
really active/aggressive around here.

One of them nailed me in the wrist on Sunday afternoon. My left forearm
now looks like Popeye the Sailor's arm (OK not quite that bad but
definitely puffy, swollen, tight skin, some clear fluid weeping in
spots, from the mid-forearm down to my knuckles. Cannot make a fist with
that hand right now due to the swelling.

I react that way to yellow jackets. Not much to do about it but wait it
out. Bee stings, other wasps don't seem to have nearly that effect.

I dispatched the nest that evening with a big load of insecticide spray,
after they had all returned for the night.
