I know this woman who lived in Colorado for some years. She was out with her daughter walking the dog in the snow, to go down the road a mile or so to get the mail. When they came back they saw cougar paw prints right in their boot prints, it was following and stalking them and was not too far behind. It was using their prints for “cover.” They could see where it broke off to get off the road. Smart critters will circle back around to see what is following them. I've had bucks do that on me, and I've had a coyote do that to me when I was walking a dog. I can see how a smart buck would have you walking in circles! I hunted with a friend up in Vermont who used that method. He was very successful with it. I still don't understand how he moved so fast with a foot of fresh, wet snow on the ground.
