Re: [MBZ] Anybody there?

2014-06-09 Thread Curt Raymond
I'm on a work trip to California, last week I gave training and I will again
Wed-Fri. Today and tomorrow I'm sitting in on a ProTools tech class. ProTools
is pretty much the standard for audio editing software. Most everything you
hear has probably at least touched PT at some point. Most of it flys right over
my head, I really don't have the background to understand it. The idea behind
my sitting into the class is to just help me to talk to audio customers more
coherently.

Yesterday I took my Dodge Challenger rental on the Angeles Crest Highway which
runs through the Angeles National Forest. Very fun twisty mountain driving.
Leave the slushbox in 2nd, enter a curve around 40mph, exit at about 55mph, run
up to maybe 65mph then hard on the brakes before the next curve always slightly
worried some slowpoke will be loafing at 35mph up ahead. Fortunately on a
Sunday afternoon there aren't that many tourists. I had the windows down and
the radio off and could just hear some fun engine note at 4500rpm. If I had one
of these cars the first thing I'd do is put a louder exhaust on it. My rental
also has VERY long legs, the little 6cyl doesn't make much power below about
3,000rpm which means 2nd gear at 40mph just starts to get fun. A lower gearset
and a manual trans would make it a much more entertaining car. Still for a
rental its not bad.

Yep, I heard a lot of good stories, too, that I should have recorded but
never did. Mom was born in 1897; Dad was born in 1879, paternal grndad was
drafted into Confederate Army in 1862 (wife and 2 children), wounded in
Battle of Petersburg, captured at Holder's Run (POW at Pt Lookout, MD). He
and his wife (my grndmom) each had brother killed at Gettysburg July 3,
1863. Grndad also had an uncle who died as POW at Pt. Lookout.

ship sunk by the Japs in WWII and has some interesting tales about that,

Re: [MBZ] Anybody there? - CRUISE CONTROL

2013-03-26 Thread Dieselhead

Is white lithium suitable for linkage rods if I pop them off socket and lube?

I won't use that crap for anything. It turns into the rock
it's named for, or so it seems.

-- Jim

I won't use lithium for anything for the above reasons. I use moly
grease. Some I applied 30 years ago or more is still good. It is
the M1 of grease. It is great for throttle linkages, motorsickle
cables, bike cables etc. If you don't have antiseize, it is not a
bad stand-in when you need antiseize.

Molykote BR2 grease at your local bearing supplier/industrial supplier.

no affiliation etc etc/usual disclaimer

Wilton reminds me of my cousin. Both entered the military as enlisted
men, both became officers, both were good story tellers, etc.

Cousin was an army air corp logistics officer stationed in Britain during
WW-2. He was told to get ammunition to North Africa ASAP. The only
pilots available were on R&R and the only planes available were (B-24s?)
deadlined for structural problems. He invited the R&R pilots to a party
and talked one of the generals into donating his stock of very scarce
whiskey. After the pilots got pretty well lubricated he persuaded them to
sign a roster for a secret flight the next day.

The pilots were very unhappy about where they were going and what they
were flying the next morning, but they successfully delivered the ammo and
made it back to Britain.

After the war, cousin went to Chiang Kai-sheks China as General Marshalls
logistics officer; a failed mission as everyone knows. He finished out
his career as a personnel officer at MacDill. AFB.

Here is info on the B-24s structural problems:

http://usaircraft.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=1445&page=2#4354

Gerry

PS: Cousins "fame" has persisted long after his military career ended.
After the war, MacDill AFB officers would hunt wild hogs on the Avon Park
bombing range when there was no military activity. Cousin would find
enlisted men and "volunteer" them as "aides" for the hunts; a difficult
and dangerous job.
One enlistee made the mistake of doing a great job on his first hunt, so
cousin "volunteered" him many times.
After discharge, the enlistee became a successful cartoonist and
apparently "got even" with cousin by including his cartoon image in his
comic strips that are still being drawn by his son.
Cousins wife, a railroad workers daughter from Mississippi; who was very
proud of being "the colonels lady"; would turn beet red anytime someone
mentioned that infamous cartoon strip.
You can find it in nearly any major newspaper. Look for "General
Halftrack". He looks just like cousin did.
Note: The wild hog sausage from those hunts was some of the best I've
ever eaten.

Re: [MBZ] Anybody there?

2013-03-26 Thread Gerry Archer
Wilton reminds me of my cousin. Both entered the military as enlisted men,
both became officers, both were good story tellers, etc.

Cousin was an army air corp logistics officer stationed in Britain during
WW-2. He was told to get ammunition to North Africa ASAP. The only pilots
available were on R&R and the only planes available were (B-24s?) deadlined
for structural problems. He invited the R&R pilots to a party and talked
one of the generals into donating his stock of very scarce whiskey. After
the pilots got pretty well lubricated he persuaded them to sign a roster for
a secret flight the next day.

The pilots were very unhappy about where they were going and what they were
flying the next morning, but they successfully delivered the ammo and made
it back to Britain.

After the war, cousin went to Chiang Kai-sheks China as General Marshalls
logistics officer; a failed mission as everyone knows. He finished out his
career as a personnel officer at MacDill. AFB.

Here is info on the B-24s structural problems:

http://usaircraft.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=1445&page=2#4354

Gerry

PS: Cousins "fame" has persisted long after his military career ended.
After the war, MacDill AFB officers would hunt wild hogs on the Avon Park
bombing range when there was no military activity. Cousin would find
enlisted men and "volunteer" them as "aides" for the hunts; a difficult and
dangerous job.
One enlistee made the mistake of doing a great job on his first hunt, so
cousin "volunteered" him many times.
After discharge, the enlistee became a successful cartoonist and apparently
"got even" with cousin by including his cartoon image in his comic strips
that are still being drawn by his son.
Note: The wild hog sausage from those hunts was some of the best I've ever
eaten.

Flagstaff on the other hand does.. a lot. I-40 is closed I hear. Travel the
north at your own risk. Arizona is the only state that has all 4 seasons on
the same day due to the huge diversity of climate and geography.

Back to shoveling the sunshine off the drive... naw.. I'll just let it

It's the dark of the moon. 65% of the time there is more email during the
light of the moon than the dark of the moon.

More babies are born during the light of the moon.

Psychiatric wards go wild during the light of the moon.

There is much debate about the effect of the moon on human behaviour and
various research studies have disproven it, but employees of psychiatric and
obstetric wards know otherwise since they have to put in extra
supplies/drugs before the light of the moon.

I went to grad school at 41 and, yes, the "kids" were young. I recall
puzzling over the author of a mathematics textbook whose name was
familiar. When I realized and exclaimed out loud that I had the author's
father as my math instructor in college, I got a good laugh out of all of
the others in the study session.

They were, however, very supportive and encouraging of me. That was
particularly helpful my first semester back after being out for 20 years.

As I was approaching graduation at age 37, SWMBO and others, including head
of the civil engineering graduate school, kept telling me, "You should go on
graduate school while you're at it." My reply, "Any more schooling I do is
gonna be on full pay and allowances." 'Thought I'd be able to go to
graduate school (Air Force Institute of Technology) in the Air Force. By
the time I was selected for it, the final selection board thought I was "too
senior" (40-year-old major) - 'sent 24-year-old lieutenant, instead. I went
straight to base civil engineering job I would have gotten after the school,
anyway - straight from flying B-52's to base civil engineer (Well, for 4
years, anyway, then back to B-52's.)

That has a great deal to do with it, as well as the ability to manage time
and projects that comes with maturity and managing a household/family.

I always got a kick out of the "kids" in my cohort that would be wildly
texting and carrying on the Sunday before a project or paper was due.
"Let's meet in the library at 11:00 (pm) Sunday night and have a study
session!"

No thanks, kids, I was done with this last week. I'm going to get some
sleep.

I think a lot of the "silly" and "ridiculous" has more to do with dealing
with the maturity and frontal lobe development of the typical 18-22 year
old. If the majority of students were in their 30s or 40s a lot of that
would not be necessary, I believe.

The one crippling aspect of higher education at a later age is the
inability to realize the benefits of such if you decide to progress into
graduate school. I was seriously considering continuing on until I
realized that, A: I would never reach my full earnings potential due to
the late start in my career, and B: the cost/benefit aspect of it didn't
make sense, either. I didn't want to be paying student loans out of my SS
or pension...

Sure would have been fun and challenging, however.

The maturity thing is why in Canada (or at least Ontario twenty years
ago) kids heading for college take an extra year of high school (Grade
13) before they go. Makes a huge difference -- I would have GREATLY
benefited by being a year older before I started undergrad, I really
wasted that first year. Big change for the second year, I'd have done
somewhat better if I'd started then.

Spend 5 years working before I went to graduate school, and that's not
a bad idea either!

I have some friends who will be in debt the rest of their lives because
they are sending their daughter to Brown. Will she get a good
education? Most likely. Will she develop connections that help her the
rest of her life? Probably, but I doubt it, since neither she nor her
family run in the rarified air that many of the other students and their

I think they told us this year's tuition with be something north of
$60k.

Is it really worth it? I don't think so.

My wife spent a year at Hahvahd and tolerated it for what she
needed/wanted to do. It is way overrated. Most undergrad classes are
taught by grad students, and even a lot of grad classes. The main
thing they put forth is that a shingle from there gives you some kind
of cred, and if you work it well, some contacts for moving forward in
the world. If you are half-smart you can get a good education/training
anywhere, pretty much depends on what you put into it. I have a fair
number of friends who went there, they are all pretty smart, but never
felt like they got a really great deal from the experience.

These days Hahvahd seems more interested in finding minority gay

They manage to do that too, surprisingly enough.

What Wilton said.

I have some friends who will be in debt the rest of their lives because
they are sending their daughter to Brown. Will she get a good education?
Most likely. Will she develop connections that help her the rest of her
life? Probably, but I doubt it, since neither she nor her family run in
the rarified air that many of the other students and their families do.

I think they told us this year's tuition with be something north of $60k.

Is it really worth it? I don't think so.

My wife spent a year at Hahvahd and tolerated it for what she
needed/wanted to do. It is way overrated. Most undergrad classes are
taught by grad students, and even a lot of grad classes. The main thing
they put forth is that a shingle from there gives you some kind of cred,
and if you work it well, some contacts for moving forward in the world.
If you are half-smart you can get a good education/training anywhere,
pretty much depends on what you put into it. I have a fair number of
friends who went there, they are all pretty smart, but never felt like
they got a really great deal from the experience.

These days Hahvahd seems more interested in finding minority gay

They manage to do that too, surprisingly enough.

I had a young lady friend who lived a block or so from the Jumboschool,
she and a coupla other girls shared a floor of a big house. Spent a
fair amount of time there. I looked at an apt for myself about a block
from there, across from the practice field, but the girl who was living
there told me the landlady (an old Italian lady) liked to snoop around
their stuff while they were gone so she did not recommend it. The old
lady liked me as I was not a student and offered to lower the rent, but
I figured she would be a total PITA so I begged off. I think the rent
at the time was like $400 and she offered me $375.
