Re: [MBZ] [Banned] question about a 1984 Jaguar VanDen Plas

2008-03-27 Thread Rich Thomas
The kid across the street had his BIL bring his old VW bus he drove in
high school and deposit it in the drive of their rental house. His
sister got pissed off of the thing sitting at her house so she told
hubby to bring it to him. It is painted in rattle-can camo, in
surprisingly good shape body-wise but it has not been run in a few years
and the interior got torn out for some resto project that has not yet
happened. Some of the neighbors think it is a bit of an eyesore, but
the kids are nice, bunch of college grads with good jobs who like to
hunt and fish weekends, one of them has a big ranch down south
somewhere. Anyway, it would be a good candidate for Porsche transplant,
if anyone has a spare turbo around

Now that first one is real cool. A full rollcage and all. I could live
with that. Looks like a lot of people over on Germany are putting
Porsche engines of one kind or another in VW buses.

The one I have isn't a turbo but I could be talked into selling it if
they want to go in that direction. If the bus they have is one that
originally had the 411 type engine in it then the Porsche 6 will fit in
very easily. Basically no modification. Unfortunately the body on mine
is not goo enough to do much with. Too much rust on it in my opinion.

Personally, considering the high price of diesel, I would like to have a

What other unique combinations could be put together?

Re: [MBZ] [Banned] question about a 1984 Jaguar VanDen Plas

2008-03-22 Thread Bill R
After avoiding it for awhile I decided to go and look at the Jaguar. Turns
out my wife thought I might need a hobby now that my car was pretty well
squared away. I thought she was interested in it for her, and then
explained that a 27 YO MB was all the hobby I needed. From a block away it
wasn't too bad. The one spot of rust turned out to be a hole you could
almost stick your hand through just in front of the right side fuel filler,
and was extensive enough that that entire section of the car needed to be
replaced, as well as much work being needed to get the trunk to close. He
did not think it worth mentioning the rust bubbling across most of the top
of the rear window, the rust in the wheel well, that the sunroof did not
lift back into a fully closed position [that's not a problem, it doesn't
leak] and that the nice interior wasn't. I can't tell you anything about
the front or left side of the car as I didn't bother walking all the way
around it, nor did I bother opening a door to see more than I could see
through the window. Suffice it to say that even at $600 it was no bargain.
Had he offered me $600 to take it I would still have walked away, though
perhaps not as I can call and donate such a car for tax credit.
Think I will stick to my old MB.

There is a reason that not one, but multiple, companies make a good living
out of offering kits, service, and straight complete conversions for
dropping small block GM's (usually Chevy 350's) into Jaguars. I'd say if the
body is in very good shape and the rust is manageable (ie not full out holes
yet) the car is worth $600, but you'll be putting something other that a Jag
engine in it.

Oh, and you'll probably need to rewire it, I think the 70's, 80's and early
90's were all referred to in an offbeat manner that I can not currently
recall. But the Brits make fun of the electronics on a regular enough basis
that *I've* heard about it, and I don't own a Jag. Apparently they are wired
reverse or something, Positive ground and the gauges are unreliable. I'll
have to hunt down the term I can't think of right now.

However, as far as looks go, I've always like the long sleek look of the XJ.
Just put some MB mechanicals underneath and you're ready to go.
