Re: [MBZ] FS: 2002 E320 Sedan

2024-04-23 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Youngest son has driven it since I brought it home. He’s a car guy some, as in
he does a great job taking care of it, and if repairs are necessary he’ll do it
with my help or direction. It’s been trouble-free for the most part. I’ve got
all the service records from our ownership, and probably the most significant
repair was an AC compressor a year or two ago.

It had been consuming oil, but on the advice of Jono, the owner of Blue Ridge
Mercedes, we changed it from 0W-40 to 15W-50 and it stopped. It’s garaged and
has been for most of our ownership. No problems with cold weather and the
higher viscosity.

Cosmetically it’s very nice. The weldment strips on the roof have peeling of
the clear coat, but otherwise the car’s finish in pretty nice. Yes, it’s been
in four seasons for four years, but salt is not used in Flagstaff, just
volcanic cinders.

I’m tied up with a lot of stuff at the Flagstaff house the next couple of
weeks, so I probably won’t tear into it until next week. I’ll get plenty of
pictures when I do.

This is the key.

If you belong to a “good” chapter, like the Washington D.C. or Seattle ones, I
would say it’s definitely worth it. If you have a local chapter that’s a dud,
or just a koffee klatch for the core group that has run it for decades and does
what they like to do and nothing else (Tampa Bay Section) it’s a waste of money.

Re: [MBZ] MBCA

2024-04-22 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
I was taken by surprise when the dues went up recently. I gather the MBCA
was haemorrhaging members by the thousands, so much so that the kickback
that used to come to the local chapters from the "National" level were
suspended, meaning locals had to scramble to raise funds. Others here
likely know a lot more of the details behind that.

I used to enjoy the *Star* magazine, but since their "redesign" they have
almost completely abandoned the tech columns that were really, for me, the
item of primary interest. Not because it isn't possible to find the tech
info online, but because of the variety of things that I wouldn't
necessarily be exposed to for myself; you never know what you might own in
future. I did find their occasional online events pretty good.

For me, the dealer discount isn't worth it because retail dealer prices are
way overinflated. I'd sooner order online from a dealer; the 25-35%
discount on internet orders far exceeds the MBCA discount.

The local MBCA chapter near San Francisco runs First Sunday Drives, but
those seem to involve pretty much only newer MBs. Any of my 1970s MBs would
easily be the oldest vehicles there, by a couple of decades. Lots of
post-2010, computerised appliances that I just have no interest in seeing.
They don't seem to get that it was the W123/W126 that *defined*
dependability for Mercedes.

As with any car club, it's always the same people slaving away, running
everything until they're finally broken and quit. I've seen it with the
Citroën club, the Arcane Club, the Renault club, and lately with the MBCA
Bay Area chapter.

Condsidering it's at least $100k too low for a fully restored example, I'd say
yes.

Google image search didn't find an exact matching image from any other sales
sites, but with AI capabilities, one could be faked or a different background
could be substituted.

Anyone participate in this group anymore?

I remember in the late 90s and the early naughts that were, at least here in
AZ, not really a living group. Membership did afford me a discount when I
purchased parts at the dealer, one rally-ish journey up the mountain once a
year, and a Christmas Dinner.

I wonder if the group is evolving just as MB owners are evolving.

Needs a little TLC: -break has unusual distance when pressed but she
stops as she should -valve cover gasket need replacing, you can see and
smell it -The display screen is pulsing in and out -secondary battery
bad -AC not blowing cold The good is that she drives/ride nice and
smooth down the street. Looks great with a good looking interior! Has
probable $1,500 in wheels and tires on it. Come get her before she goes

This past weekend I probably spend 5 hours reassembling on Saturday and another
4 hours Sunday. Car is back together and appears leak free as far as I can tell
so far. I appear to have a bad back pressure sensor and I apparently didn’t get
the intake air temp sensor clicked back in as it blew out and broke it on the
test drive. Put in a parts order to start the same job on the GL next week.

Currently I have the car up in the lift checking for leaks and the underside is
horribly grimy from all the oil. With it on the lift I’m thinking about putting
down drip trays, soaking it with engine degreaser, followed by blasting it off
with steam cleaner, then maybe red brake cleaner followed by more steam.
Anybody have any better ideas?

Btw the HF steam cleaner is on sale for $89 currently.

[MBZ] Bamboo

2024-04-21 Thread RICK HAWKINS via Mercedes
Folks

I second the don’t on bamboo …. I have a stand of it behind an Athens, ga house
and it has spread way more than I would have liked

Drove my sprinter about 1000 miles over the last week or so dragging a trailer
with a 1200 lb printing press on it . I almost lost a trailer wheel … when I
paused after 700 miles on tybee I saw that there weee no bearings in one of the
hubs … I grabbed a complete hub and bearings off another little camper and it
fit and worked for 250 miles. I bought two hubs and bearings off Amazon return
for only $40 delivered … they look pretty good … we will see if they fit

Re: [MBZ] OT bamboo

2024-04-21 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
One word: Don’t

I had a neighbor that bought a house a block over. Their backyard backs up to a
side street, and there is a concrete block wall along the back of their
property.

The previous owner planted bamboo, I have no idea what strain, and within 2-3
years it had almost taken over the backyard. The new owner didn’t realize how
difficult it would be to remove.

He had to hire a landscaping company that brought in an excavator that could
“reach over” the wall and dig most of it out. The rest they pulled out by hand.

We had volunteer bamboo in the back yard of the house we rented while I
was in grad school.

I wanted to plant a fig tree where it was, so I went to that corner of
the yard frequently and cut off anything green poking above the ground.
I eventually won, but it took a while.

Once the bamboo gets established you can buy a goat or a cow to take care of
the grass and buy a panda to keep the bamboo under control.

It was a short ride, I found 1-3 eventually. Never did find reverse. Had to get
out and push to get turned around. Fortunately its a light car.
