Thanks - we'll exhaust all other options before pulling the head. The
PO reports that it's been this way the last several years, and has not
gotten any worse. He also reports that it doesn't miss at idle in the
heat of the summer, only the other three seasons.

Unplugging the idle control will only make it drop back to mechanical
idle, it does absolutely nothing but regulate idle speed. No white
smoke, no stumbles unless its' very intermittant, and if it is, you
need to fix the broken wire.

Don,
If the headgasket has ruptured at front oil passage, oil consumption should
skyrocket. Any sign of coolant in oil or vice versa? Consider an engine oil
analysis to know for sure if you've got coolant being burned.
Have you tried unplugging the EDS computer connection on back of IP?

Don,
Just catching up on the digests. Before you take off the head you might
want to check the timing chain and if that's good then check the
injection timing. It sounds like the timing is retarded. Stretched
timing chain can do that if everything else is OK. Then when you take

Well, it blows some white smoke while cold, none after it warms up

I paid something ridiculous like $19.99 for the Harbor Freight one
with 20 or 30 adapters.
Like this, but I swear it had a lot more pieces:

OK Don, KD5NRO

Forget what I said then, as blown head gasket at oil passage is supposed to
present as rough idle and increased blue smoke...

When I had that car it would litterally fog up the neighborhood when it
was sitting there idling. Dont know if it still does taht or not but
problems like that just dont dissappear.

Oh, boy -- low compression on #1 is often a blown head gasket, and eventually
it will allow too much oil into the #1 cylinder (from the pressure passage
across the front of the block) and bend the rods.
I'd check for excessive blowby and plan on replacing the head gasket -- you are
about ready
Email phone @ gulseth.net if you do

That car has a blown head gasket, I traded it to whats his name as such.
It doesnt have the typical coolant problem, I suspect this one is blown
between #1 and the timing area

Where is this oil line from the block to the pump?
I just finished the bottle of Power Service - will get more.

My son's "new" '87 300D misses, or stumbles when warm and idling. It's
like it fails to fire once every second or two. It looks like the
delivery valve seals are leaking some, but Diesel is not pouring off
the top of the IP.
It also blows white smoke when it starts - till warm - and smells like
