Might be other things, but the speedo cable makes a squealing noise
when it is about to break. You might try lubing it, but chances are
it's going to go, if it's squealing.
Not a real difficult replacement (though the one I did was on an 85
190D.

My 77 240D did that for a while. I "reseated" the speedo cable (took it out,
blew the dust off of it, and reattached) and the noise went away and has
stayed away. I think it had just become a bit loose, and tightening fixed
the problem.
