Seriously - what's wrong with your starter? Balky or dead? My balky

Re: [MBZ] 123 Starter Motor Woes

2013-08-16 Thread Randy Bennell
Can you use just one long extension and can you get an impact type
extension?
My experience with impact guns is that every joint in the setup tends to
lessen the impact force.
If it is really tight you need to be as up close and personal as
possible and have a good gun with lots of torque available.
We had a devil of a time trying to remove the front half shafts on our
old 4Runner because of this. My brother-in-law who is a mechanic came by
with his impact gun and did it without the universal joint and
extensions and his better gun and spun them off quickly where I had
tried with my universal joint and couple of extensions and lesser gun.

the transmission and in the space along side it. Set the gun at highest
setting for impact and engage trigger... after making sure you have the 10
MM hex fully engaged and good forward pressure on the extensions. I use a
leather glove on the hand guiding the extensions while running the impact

Should hammer for a few strokes and spin right out..

Helps if you have the car on 4 ea. 3 ton jackstands at high enough setting
to give you room to work. Lay a piece of cardboard on shop floor to lay on,
which will give you another 5 inches rather than use a creeper..

Good luck...

He says that with some effort he has been able to crack loose the lower
bolt, but the top bolt won't budge, in part because he does not have the
proper tool, and because it is tight and difficult to access. He has soaked
it with penetrating oil and is on a seven day waiting period for that to
soak in. Meanwhile he tells me that the proper tool is a Hazet 10 mm hex
wrench or socket for busting loose that bolt. So anyway, I'd like to give
him any information on how others have tackled this job.

You can get some of it back by grabbing the extension at the gun and turning it
counterclockwise so it takes up the play in all the joints.

With a series of 1/2 drive extensions and universal joints. The worst part is
that you have very little room to turn, so you must get everything wound up so
the slack is out of it before you get it positioned to turn the ratchet.

You have to snap the driver to break it loose, so I've found.

2013-08-15 Thread Jaime Kopchinski
Dan is right... you just need a bunch of extensions and the 10mm hex on a
swivel. You come in from the bottom along the transmission. Laying under
the car, you can work the ratchet with two hands. Its helpful to have a
helper to get the hex key into the bolt. Its not a fun job, but not really
that terrible once you get the hang of it. I remember doing it once laying
in packed snow... that was no fun.
