Re: [MBZ] 12mm hex for OM603 tensioner -- was My '95 E300 project, progress report
Called the local Sears, and they said they don't stock it. Visited HF this p.m. and picked up a 9 pc set for 12.99 that has smaller sizes plus 12, 14 17mm. Also picked up the fuel injection pressure tester I need for my wife's car, also 12.99. However, her Infiniti has developed a new problem - the starter seems to be going out. Most starts it works fine, but occasionally it really turns over too slowly like the battery is going dead. Already had the old battery tested and it was very weak so a new battery was installed last month. - Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Mountain Man Sent: Saturday, January 02, 2010 7:47 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] 12mm hex for OM603 tensioner -- was My '95 E300 project, progress report Max wrote: I needed a 12mm hex key to remove the tensioner on my '87 wagon. None of the local hardware stores and auto parts stores had them, except Harbor Freight. I didn't drive all the way to Sears which is about 45 minutes each way, but I called and the clerk put me on hold while he looked then came back and said they didn't stock that size. Of course he may have missed it, next time I'm up that way maybe I'll take a gander. -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Mitch Haley Sent: Saturday, January 02, 2010 10:09 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] 12mm hex for OM603 tensioner -- was My '95 E300 project, progress report Max Dillon wrote: Autozone here doesn't carry them, but I didn't try the Harbor Freight. Re: [MBZ] 12mm hex for OM603 tensioner -- was My '95 E300 project, progress report
My advice is that if you are working on MB cars you need an Allen/torx key set. I recently purchased a set like this for AU$300 to put in my work truck. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/High-quality-socket-set-for-professionals-from-Germany_W0QQitemZ270507214914QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Hand_Tools?hash=item3efb7c8842 BGS technic are a German based tool distributor http://www.bgstechnic.de/index.php?lang=en that have been in business for quite some time. They offer a large range of tools (including some we are very familiar with) in several grades, from home handyman to pro+. That set comes under the pro+ line and I am very impressed with them. How much would a set like that cost if it was snap on? 1000's? I do believe the tools are made in Asia somewhere but you would not know from the feel and fit of them. That set has a super lock feature on the sockets which means they grip the sides rather than the edges of nuts and bolts. Yes, I bought mine set at Sears. I've also been known to cut off the long end of an appropriately sized Allen wrench, and use it with the same sized socket. Autozone here doesn't carry them, but I didn't try the Harbor Freight. It's way across town, and I often forget about them when I'm looking for tools. I was time-limited today, as I had to drive my wife's car and she also had places to go and people to see, so I'll use that as my excuse for now to justify a future trip. I still need to pick up a fuel pressure gauge set for my wife's car. Need to get this second Benz up and running so I can spend more time at HF -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Kaleb C. I was out in the garage working on my '87 replacing the belt tensioner, when that project came to a sudden halt due to a tool shortage (don't own a 12mm hex key). Decided to mess around with the '95 as I'd gotten some marking paint and I thought it was a good time to remove the camshaft gear. Pulled the valve cover and marked the gear and chain position, then while waiting for that to dry I started pulling on the timing chain at the IP timer to see how necessary the special tool was. To my surprise, after just a few minutes of fiddling the IP timer came right out. Installed the new one, and then re-installed the injection pump. Buy a half inch drive set, Sears will have one. Snap-On will too, but they are much more expensive. I don't know of a 3/8 drive set that goes that big. Thanks Craig, if HF doesn't have a suitable tool I may go this route. Allen wrenches are good for taking them apart, but putting together to a particular torque value requires a socket that'll fit my 1/2 inch torque wrench. -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Craig McCluskey Sent: Saturday, January 02, 2010 7:39 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] 12mm hex for OM603 tensioner -- was My '95 E300 project, progress report On Sat, 02 Jan 2010 18:01:57 -0600 Kaleb C. Nice tools are fantastic to have, and I go that route for tools that I use very frequently. This tool, on the other hand, will maybe only be used once or twice more in my garage, so I can't justify spending too much $ on it. I recently purchased a set like this for AU$300 to put in my work truck. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/High-quality-socket-set-for-professionals-from-German y_W0QQitemZ270507214914QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Hand_Tools?hash=item3efb7c8842 BGS technic are a German based tool distributor http://www.bgstechnic.de/index.php?lang=en that have been in business for quite some time.
