Assuming the clutch and adjustment are working ok, and the shift linkage
is
in proper adjustment, then pull the trans, clean it up and replace the
synchro rings as necessary. it becomes pretty obvious when you pull the
cover off. I have only seen 1 bad manual trans in 30+ years of MBs. That
one I believe was run dry, and then WAS filled with 90W. It was not on
one
of my cars, but one i agreed to look at for another guy. I replaced a
couple of bearings, some synchro rings and the seals. While you are in
there, may as well check the bearings and replace the seals.
Careful disassembly, and cleanliness are the order of the day. On the
older ones, there were split roller bearings with brass cages and such.
No
trouble if you are careful, but lots of rollers can fall out if you are
not
careful. I can't say about the construction of the newer trans used on
the
123.
