Re: [MBZ] 2004 E320 4Matic- ABS ESP Malfunction Question
There's no physical contact between the sensors and the rotors, so I would be surprised if any non-ferrous material that might get in there during storage, like spider webs, bugs, etc., would affect the operation. The wheel sensors are always a good place to start looking if you're getting lights. I'm not sure how rust or corrosion might affect them, however. I would agree that some vigorous driving might clear things up. Can't hurt to have a look, though. Re: [MBZ] 2004 E320 4Matic- ABS ESP Malfunction Question
Doesn't ESP use sensors to keep the brake pads as close as possible to the rotors to reduce braking distance? I would imagine that corrosion on the discs would mess with that system. I'd be inclined to try cheap/easy first (drive the car a bit) before taking complex systems apart. Isn't there some special procedure required before any brake on that car? Another thought: make sure all the tires are inflated to spec, one tire too low will turn faster than the rest, and that may trigger the ABS light. Re: [MBZ] 2004 E320 4Matic- ABS ESP Malfunction Question
Good suggestion, Max. I hadn't thought about the 4Matic stuff. I found this out the hard way for a friend with a Subaru. Seems that he replaced a tire due to some road damage. After doing so, he kept getting errors from the AWD system. I looked at it for him and did some research on the system. Seems that if the tire diameter(s) deviate more than a certain percentage the system gets ugly and won't work. He had to put a whole new set of tires on the car. Re: [MBZ] 2004 E320 4Matic- ABS ESP Malfunction Question
Depends on what car. I've had one 240D in storage for about 10 years. I've moved it a few times in that period, and worked on some things, but it has not been run on the road. 2 weeks ago I got it out, washed it off and fired it up and been running it. Only problems are the fuel gauge and alt. I bought a used alt for $25 (less than new bruses and VR set) and cleaned the fuel level sender. 240Ds store well. I would expect a 123 300D NA would store well too. new cars with electronic crap don't. I expect my 2 240Ds to be the last cars I ever drive in this life. They just keep going. At the end of the world, only cockroaches and 240Ds will be running. Storage, the single most destructive thing you can do to a car. Re: [MBZ] 2004 E320 4Matic- ABS ESP Malfunction Question
I know the feeling -- I've got a 78 240D like that. 330K and still going strong. The rust bug is getting going pretty bad on the rockers and floors. Also the park lug broke so it rolls in park. Other than that it just needs TLC. I refuse to scrap it as it's too good for that but I doubt I'd get much for it due to the rust. But it starts instantly every time.
