Part of the starter. Back in the day we called it a "Bendix" on old Chevy's,
because that's who made them.

The clutch is replaceable, but you have to take the starter off to get to it.
It's part of the drive gear.

Yup, if you quit before it starts it gets progressively harder on each retry.
Give it everything it's got on that one try.

Don't forget to put the go pedal to the floor and crank until it starts or
quits. My 83 240D would start pretty well down to about -10F. That first winter
I drove that car we had a week of -20F every frickin night. That was when I
figured out that a 400W inverter would power the block heater...
When I do that on my W116 300SD, the starter disengages after about 10
seconds and seems to just spin free. So it must have a weak solenoid?

Yes, OM616 and OM617 take the same block heater.

The real key to cold starting to crank until it's actually running, if you stop
you won't have enough battery to try again without charging it.
I started my 300D a few year back with a weak engine (420k miles) doing that,
it took about a minute before it was actually running on it's own. Lotta
When I got my first 240D-Curt taught me the cold weather way to start them.
Triple glow and fire off. I fired off my 79 that way at 4F.

My $400 240D I bought has been sitting outside not started for over a week. It
is currently 13 outside and for grins I wanted to see if it would start. I did
not figure it would but I glowed it once then as soon as light went out I
started cranking it. It started hitting and slowest all
