Re: [MBZ] 300D Manny
My 300TD wagon was losing power going up long hills but after I changed the main fuel filter, it never skipped a beat. My 2015 Jetta TDI is a hoot and a hollar, 140ish post-dieselgate HP scoots it along nice. It'll pull hard up around 95mph which is as fast as I've ever cared to go. Its maybe a little bigger than a 123 inside. I can ride in the backseat with the front seat setup for me. If I put the front seat all the way back I can't get the clutch all the way down. Slightly more tinny than a 123 but the engine is quieter so its probably a wash. A 190D has the same power but a little less weight and could hold speed up the hills. I was very happy with my '98 Jetta TDI, at 90hp it had enough power to accelerate up those hills so I recon a 240D 3.0 would probably be able to sustain speed or maybe accelerate a little. Of course there would be a fuel use penalty on the NA engine. -Curt My W115 300D doesn't generally feel too anaemic on hills but we in relatively flat country here on the eastern edge of the prairies. If feels generally alright on hills unless I have to stop and then climb the hill. I have taken the car to the cottage periodically and there is one place on the highway west bound out of Kenora, Ontario where the road through town meets the by-pass around the town. There is a stop sign and after the stop, I have to make a hard left hand turn onto the highway and climb uphill for half a mile or more. I have a difficult time getting up to highway speed in that location. The road from the east is a long straight stretch and there is enough traffic that I will generally have vehicles behind me wishing that I would get out of their way by the time I get to the top and start down the other side. This is all 2 lane highway so there is no real opportunity for them to pass me.
