More likely the latter. Next time it won't go, retry it with your left hand,
holding the key in the start position while moving the shifter

On my 240D, when this happens I only need to push the shift lever to the
right (to the stop in the gate) and the car fires right up.

and one day shorted out everything. Replaced neutral switch and a
bunch of other stuff.. Got a suggestion and removed remaining
pieces and she started
