If it makes serious smoke under hard acceleration, the EGR is stuck open. Or at least not closing properly. Had this issue on the Volvo TD, very serious smoke. Plated off the EGR on that one, it really only needed the actuator rod cleaned so it closed properly (and all the goop cleaned out

The CEL is a known issue with the EGR. The EGRs screw up as they age and stop working or get clogged. You can’t disconnect them without it throwing a CEL, which is why it’s doing it. Connect it back up and the car will run like garbage. There’s a guy in the UK who sells a little bypass box of
