yes that is true, assuming his car has the 722.6, which it seems he
does, he would need to clear the fault and get the TCM happy
If it is a 722.9 the speed sensor can go bad due to a fault in the
circuitry of the conductor plate and can be repaired. Lots of shops
will do it or it appears to b

In the W210 the TCM's limp-home mode is NOT self-clearing. Likewise, if the TCM
is dead you get limp-home, which is 2nd and R only in the transmission. (These
are
mechanically selected by the lever.) I suspect that the W211 is the same.

You have to have a good conductor plate, a good connection out of the
transmission,
and a good TCM. In the W210, the TCM is prone to filling with transmission oil
that wicks
up the cable from bad seals in the connector. The goo eventually dissolves
parts in the
TCM, which is Not Good. I doubt
I have replaced 2 CPs (I’m assuming this is a 722.6?) and that usually resolves
problems. Could it be a solenoid? Is the speed sensor a separate part in the
CP, I can’t remember. Or maybe the TCM itself is bad? You could try swapping
one, should be plenty in junkyards or eBay for not much.

Transmission Manual. If anyone wants a copy send me a note.
Also, I don't monitor this site very often anymore but I'd like to
