My 86 300SDL has a Denso 10P15C a/c compressor. I've found various
configurations of this compressor ranging in price from $35 to over $500.
The $35 fits the '87 to '94 Ford Escort. Where can I find out the
difference between the version that fits the Escort and the version that
fits the 300SDL? Obviously there's a significant financial benefit if the
difference is simply the type of clutch / pulley or something that can be
easily modified. FWIW, Rusty's web site shows that he doesn't have any in
stock.

The ports are on a removable plate, so you should be able to swap your
fittings over by switching that plate. The one I bought for a friend's
Toyota last year didn't even come with the port housing, had to remove a
cover plate, throw it away, and bolt up the port housing that came with
the car.

Getting the right clutch and pulley might be fun.

Other than the above, and whether the factory installed oil is for R12 or
R134a, I think they are all the same, but I can't be certain of that.

If I were buying, I'd be looking for a brand new, real Nippondenso with
the right pulley for MBZ in the $170-230 range. They are out there.

Yowza! I don't think I've ever seen a silver SDL. What color is the

As far as things to look for--- good cooling system maintenance

in very good condition. Needs detailing and a couple very small tears in
the seats. Sheepskins on the front seats so couldn;t seee them very well -
tires and wheels good except the wheels are chromed (Yuck)

Asking ~$3900 but will deal. What's it worth - I know, Kaleb says $200.
How about a more common selling price?Any majoy problems to watch out
 for?

Yowza! I don't think I've ever seen a silver SDL. What color is the
interior? Where is the car located? I might be interested if you
 pass on it.

As far as things to look for--- good cooling system maintenance
(mandatory) and head replacement (desirable) as with any 603 car.

Only California certified '86 SDLs had traps so head cracking was quite
infrequent on US certified '86 SDLs. 90% of the head cracking was the
result of heat stresses caused by the trap. Just removing the trap
doesn't get you home free though. The head may crack when the trap is on
but not actually fail for months or years after the trap is removed.

Re: [MBZ] 86 300SDL

2007-08-16 Thread LarryT
Hi Kaleb,
The White 92 300SD W140 has 228k and a *high* asking price of $12k. *Way*
high as far as I can tell. Should be closer to $8k. But it looks perfect.

Anyway, when I expressed interest in the '86 he said I could get it for less
than $4k.. Don;t know if he would do the same for the W140 - which looks
awesome BTW. Any 140 has a presence, but I am especially impressed by
white. Has a 5 yr engine/tranny warranty - not sure if it costs extra.

He also has a 86 190D for $5k and a 5 yr engine/tranny warranty - not sure
if it costs extra. Has 100k miles (!) but no 5 speed - THAT would be nice!

The 86 SDL is not on his website - .when I spoke with him he said he had
been driving it until recently - there wa stuff in the glovebox so that was
probably true. Stilll pondering my purchase of this.

Would love the 140, but not at $12k. Everything is located at
www.abesauto.com in Petersburg Va - a long way from Kaleb!

3900 is not bad. Just watch out for the head being cracked. Best to look
at it after it has cooled off and set overnight. If any pressure in tank,
it could be cracked. Been on the lookout for a 140 SD

Re: [MBZ] 86 300SDL

2007-08-16 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I have to get one someday. I have literally wanted a 140 300SD for over
10 years. Lets put it this way, when I was really on the serious look
for them (but never bought one) they were selling for about 36k still.
Years later got my 93 300SE but it just was not the same as the diesels.
I REALLY wanted one REAL bad. I should just sell off several cars and
buy one damn it. I want a pearl black one though, or silver perhaps.

[MBZ] '86 300SDL - Identify this switch?

2005-12-20 Thread Brian Smyla
On my 86 300SDL, there's a 7 position rotary switch under the hood on the
driver's side corner near the hood seal at the windshield. What's it do?

That is what adjusts the idle speed.

also, it's what you replace (or what's under it) if your tach is dead.
