Re: [MBZ] 87 MBZ 300 D Turbo Excessive Negative Camber

2008-07-02 Thread LarryT
Great explanation Peter, -
Do you know if the '91 300D is the same? My 91 300D sits a little lower on
one side, perhaps 1/2 or so - when the weather cools a little I'll check
things out --

Thx -

Have you looked at the subframe bushings? There are four, two front
and two rear. There should be a half and inch or more space between
subframe and body -- if not, likely the mounts are bad. I'm going to
use the ones I intended for the old car for the new one this fall
when I get the cash to do all the links.

Bad mounts may allow the subframe to rotate along the axle
centerline, making it look like there is too much camber.

It the mounts are good, all that's left is sagging springs.

I have four new springs that a friend bought for a 300E and never used. Let
me know if you are interested and I'm sure you can get them at a good
price. Hopefully there are numbers on them to see if they will fit. I have
no idea if they would help your problem though.

The springs are matched to the car by engine and other options, I
think, meaning that the front ones (at least) would be different
between a 300E and a 300D Turbo (since the OM603 is significantly
heavier than the M103).

[MBZ] 87 MBZ 300 D Turbo Excessive Negative Camber

2008-06-28 Thread Ken Rushing
My MBZ has excessive negative camber on both rear tires. I just replaced all
the links and the control arm busings (two per side) and the rubber pad
above the springs. All needed to be replaced - so no loss. But I still have
the excessive camber. Are the sub frame mount bushings next? I don't see
anything else that could contribute to it. Thanks,
Ken

Re: [MBZ] 87 MBZ 300 D Turbo Excessive Negative Camber

2008-06-28 Thread Peter Frederick
Bad subframe mounts will not affect camber, just ride and noise.

Check ride height (to check for sagging springs, they do go bad).

When you replaced the links, did you jack the wheel carrier to ride
height BEFORE tightening any of the bolts past a loose fit?

Have you had a 4-wheel alignment done by a good shop?

2008-06-28 Thread Ken Rushing
I'm not sure what the correct Ride Height is. The Vehicle Level is within
limits - only 5mm difference between rear right and left side. Should I
loosen and retighten all the link bolts when the rear axle is perfectly
horizontal? Because my mistake was probably when I tightened them all while
the wheel carrier was not supported (just dangling). Thanks again.

Re: [MBZ] 87 MBZ 300 D Turbo Excessive Negative Camber

2008-06-28 Thread Peter Frederick
Yup. You MUST jack the wheel carrier to the normal position. The
rubber in the links acts are part of the spring, and if you tighten
them up with the wheel at full extension, they pull it out of place
when you put the weight of the car on them. The wheel is too far
forward and canted in at the top, looks quite strange next to one
with the links properly installed.

Jack it up again, remove the wheels, loosen ALL the bolts (both ends)
enough that the sleeve in the center of the rubber will move freely,
jack the spring link up to the normal level height, and tighten all
the bolts.

It will handle better and ride better once you do this.

Also, do not replace the links with the cheapo aftermarket ones
without the rubber vulcanized in place around the sleeve, the car
will sit too low and give you excessive negative camber, too.
