Has anyone experienced a noisy XP valve?
Ever since I replaced the compressor, drier and XP valve there is an
intermittent noise coming from under the dash when the A/C is on.Sounds
like a high note on a saxophone.
It is not the blower. Sometimes when I shut the car off it whistles for
nearly a min

Engine vacuum only pulls down to like half atmospheric (13-14" maybe),
not really enough to do any good in an AC system.

For the 126 lie on your back with your head next to the gas
pedal. Look
As I recall, it's behind the glove box on a 123. Not really all that bad to
access.

A 123 is easy. It's the filling in a foam sandwich accessible either
thru the glove box or if not there for sure behind the lower panel
below the box. Reminds me, the insulating sandwich is kaput on my
'80; I need to order a replacement if I'm ever to get around to
recharging the thing.

Depends on which car. The expansion valve on the 124 is between the
firewall behind and inboard of the brake booster. On the 126 I expect
it's still behind and above the brake pedal (and an absolute BEAST to
work on).
Where is the expansion valve located?

Blowing a can through will not purge any moisture.

Vacuum, then recharge. The old-school way to recharge without
a vacuum pump was to blow a can or so of refrigerant through the
system,

On the old cars (123/116 at least) it's under
the go pedal. (it's the tranny kickdown switch)
A little extra wiring and it can double as the
A/C cutout switch. Some wags have mentioned that
it's pointless to use a throttle cutout on a 240D,

As an
Question is: Does running the thing without any freon in the system
harm the
compressor?
It would, except there's a pressure safety switch to prevent this.
A York compressor will tolerate it just fine, early systems using
that compressor don't have the switch. York compressors make fine

As an owner of a sub-sonic 240D I am experienced at turning the fan or

downhill and
having zero traffic in the distance. It doesn't happen often. ;-

The A/C on my 83 240D has no freon in it. Haven't checked yet whether it has
a big leak or whether it was allowed to discharge over a long period of time
by the PO.
Question is: Does running the thing without any freon in the system harm the
compressor?
Also: How much benefit do y'all think I'd
