Agreed. A Nissan is not an MB and vice-versa.

However, as solid, reliable transportation the Nissan is a good choice.

It's a Euroturd that finally got imported here to address the lower end
of the market that thinks driving one of these (it's an MB!) will
increase their social status or perceived well-being.  If you can't
afford a C-klasse coming off lease, then this is the car for you!  There
used to be some small SUV thing of some sort (B-klasse?) I would see
occasionally in Houston with Mexico plates, this was like 15-16yr ago.
They were a step up from a Smart in size.  Driving in amongst all the
F-150s looked like a sure way to kill yourself eventually.

This is a very nice looking car, but as a diesel I would check that the oil
cooler seals aren't leaking, oil stain engine pan guard ( slide 155) and
what is the condition of the crank case vent assembly. If it is worn out
will let excess oil into the intake air stream and then combine EGR gases
and make a soggy mess. Been there done that.

2020-05-28 Thread Mitchell Haley EA via Mercedes
Now that the United Kingdom has relaxed its social distancing rules,
thousands of punters have been throwing caution into the wind, and
visiting beaches to make the most of the good weather.

While there might be plenty of room on the beach, parking quickly becomes
an issue on a nice day, and one Mercedes-Benz driver decided to use a
nearby paddock.

Unfortunately for this driver, the farmer that owns the paddock in
Cornwall is obviously sick of people using his property, and decides to
get some revenge by spraying the C-Class with manure from his fertilizer
spreader.

“'I've nearly finished mate, I'm not stopping. I hope you have as much fun
washing your car as I am going to have painting it for you,” the farmer
jokes as he films the black car turning brown.

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the B-class Electric Drive—badged B250e—won’t
be offered after the 2017 model year. The B250e is Mercedes-Benz’s only
all-electric vehicle, yet the news of its demise isn’t entirely surprising. It
was conceived from the start with an unusual pedigree and a limited shelf life
while Mercedes-Benz used it to test some ideas (and meet its California
ZEV-mandate requirements) on the way to a next electric stepsnip

Yep, The 220S, 220Sa, (Ponton) 220Sb (111) (SEb 112), 230S, then the
108/9 series all precedded the 116 and all were REAL mercedes, as was
the 116. The 126 has too much prastic, but is a good car. I've had 2
well over 400k. I still lust for a 6.9.

Yes, the moron is an idiot, but at least he didn't claim the W220 or the
newer junk is the best. I do agree that the W220 might be number 999 on
the top 10 list.

Well, as a 20 year plus owner of a 116, 300SD with over 425,000 miles
and all original except the tranny, I can say this dork doesn't know
his butt from a hole in the ground about the older MBs. The "legendary
126" has too much plastic on the sides that encourages rust and the
seats just split and deteriorate. The newer models are still more
plastic and have wiring problems, etc. etc. etc.

So, now that I've got that off my chest, I'll try to enjoy the
weekend, cold weather and all.

2018-01-13 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Yes, my 1980 300SD was sold in Atlanta and has always lived here. I've owned
it for about 22 years now. It has no rust. I had to finally replace the
tranny at about 420,000 miles. And my wife replaced the seats and pads about
20 years ago. It starts and runs fine. I agree that the window seals, trunk
seal, etc. are probably the main cause of rust on the cars of this era. My
1983 300D has only one small rust spot on a rear fender and it has around
360,000 miles. Neither car gets driven much these days. My wife and I used to
drive them daily to work. I like the solid, metal feel of both the 116 and
123. Newer vehicles just don't have that.

W116's were made with Russian steel (long German steelworker's strike in the
70's) and are prone to SEVERE rust. They fell apart in Germany, too.

The vast majority are gone, just like the later W108s -- same issue, massive
rust.

Other than the massive fuel consumption (14 mpg was typical for the W117, less
for the SLC) they were fun cars. I really enjoyed my W108, but when the trunk
floor and floor pans went, I discovered the bottoms of the doors were about to
fall out too, so it went to the recyclers. No way to fix it, there wasn't any
good sheet metal below the belt line.

The usual cause like all other MB’s of the time is its not salt related it’s
body seals leaking water into the car which then rots them from the inside. If
people replaced dried out window seals it would avoid rust.

Yes the W116 is as rust prone as the W123. Personally, I feel that the w116 has
clean elegant lines and is seriously under appreciated especially for its
intrinsic beauty.

Point well taken, Roger.

I like the W116s, but I have always had concerns over the amount of rust I
often see on them. It makes me wonder if it was endemic across the model line,
or just an environmental/climate related issue for where the car “lived”?

Yours is solid, correct? Has it always been in the South?

999. W220 (1999-2006)

Yes, I've put the W220 S-Class in 999th place. Few vehicles have tarnished a
dynasty quite like the W220 S-Class, which was sold throughout the early 2000s.
Featuring weird, melted "Is it a Hyundai?" styling and embarrassing interior
materials (coupled with a similarly awful layout) these have deservedly fallen
in price more than basically any other S-Class. They're also a nightmare to own
-- especially when you buy one for $7,500 and are suddenly confronted with
repair bills that can easily surpass that figure -- and filled with all sorts
of complicated electronics that couldn't hide the fact that this vehicle,
following up the W140, represented one of the worst redesigns in automotive
history.

Not sure an early ML with 300k on the clock is going to be a decent ride...or
not decent enough
to be worth multiple thousands of dollars.
If it was $1000 with the transmission locked in 2nd gear and 150-200k on the odo

Re: [MBZ] S Class in top ten least reliable cars

2014-11-22 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
You should remember that the normal Mercedes maintenance is considered
a defect in these surveys. The normal auto buyer in the US thinks
that brake pads should last at least 10 years, and changing oil is a
biannual sort of thing. A Mercedes is unreliable if it requires
service at 20,000 mile intervals, as they NEVER perform any routine
maintenance.

I've been seeing this for decades. Of course, the Mercedes will last
them 30 years, but the typical buyer (most of them are leased now)
is bored with the loss of absolute newness in a couple years and
want's another one.

That said, the newer models are NOT as rock solid as the older ones,
excepting the rust issues with the ones made in the late 60's and
early 70's with Russian high phosphate steel. Seen any W116s lately?

New models have electronic problems, which appear to be getting worse,
and suffer from much lower quality build (thank you Chrysler!) and I'm
not sure what I'm going to replace my W124's with when they do wear
out -- 250k on the TE and 410k on the 300D.

I figured that out just before I tried to sell the 240D.

As I get older, chances are that the range I travel from home base is
likely to get smaller. (assuming a normal progression) Therefore, a
240D becomes the ideal transportation for a less than 200 mile range.
(not that they are not capable of a 2000 or 3000 range, but 5 or 6
cyl Diesels are more comfortable for those trips.)

So, the last car I drive will likely be a 240D, and that is why I
have 2 in ready reserve state. 240Ds also store well. they can sit
for a year or 2 at a time, then start up and go as if you only ran
them yesterday. (provided you maintain the battery and keep the bugs
out of the fuel.)

My replacement for 124s and 126s will be the 123.123.10 Or maybe if
I get feeble, a 123. 123.12

for gassers, most 'merkun cars/vans are adequate.

The W140 is a pretty reliable chassis, especially if you go for the post
“facelift” models of 1996 and later. The electronics are solid and the
body/chassis/engine are robust and easy to service.

I was pretty reluctant to take one on, but now that I have two with several
years and miles under my belt, I’m pretty comfortable with them. Both have
been very reliable cars and relatively trouble free considering they both now
have over 265k on each.

They are, but since the diesel W140s have been less than reliable with the
engine choice they offered, there’s something to be said for vergassers in this
case. Don’t think there are very many W140 oil burners that have 270k on their
clocks with the original engines. Fuel is cheaper, too.

And mine don’t smell. At least I’ve never smelled them.

[MBZ] Preservation class

2014-09-29 Thread clay via Mercedes
Postman just delivered the MBCA preservation class certificate. Nice enough.
Has a picture of the car and all. Seems I have not buggered it up beyond
salvation in the past three years. Now I just have to get it running properly.

[MBZ] S-class auto park

2014-07-27 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes

MBUSA have posted a vid on FB of an S-class parallel parking itself.

In a tight spot? No longer. Thanks to available Parktronic with
Active Park Assist, the S-Class lessens the worry of finding,
entering, and exiting parking spaces -- whether parallel or
perpendicular. Using advanced ultrasonic sensors, the S-Class is
able to park itself upon the driver's command, without any human
input. See it in action in this video.

I guess it kinda goes with their target demographic, at least from what
I see around here.

Re: [MBZ] S class road test

2013-07-07 Thread Dieselhead
Depends on what you call S Class -- there has been a S chassis
(for heavy) since at least 1953.

That would be the 22S in a couple variants and the 280S.

Peter

what about the typ SS and the subsequent typ SSK?

Those are S class in my book.

Do you have a favorite S-Class? Can't decide between the '20s-'30s
prewar models and the'70s,'80s '90s 116, 126 140. Don't care for the
ex-factory coachwork on the 770 shown though.

[MBZ] Cheap class

2012-08-16 Thread Dieselhead

2008 GL320 CDI was MSRP at 53.775

2008 C300 was MSPR at $31,600

Seems that makes the C300 cheap in 2008 as well as in 2012.

Did I mention it has two Lanchester balance shafts, whatever they might be.
Pretty impressive what they can pull out of a 2.1 litre Diesel these days.
And for those who don't believe in the Benz fairy

If I could afford it, my wife and 1year old son would be driving around in
a new S class and nothing else.
