THe radio dealies are something like 20-24 ga steel about 7mm wide and 
maybe 4" long with a 90º bend on the end you hold on to.


You can make your own with a tinsnips.  If you look at the area below the 
radidio, you will see the 2 little slots these are stuck  in to release 
the radio.

I am pretty sure it should be lit up all the time, there is a single bulb in 
the bottom of the unit. You have to have the 2 removal tools that fit in the 
slots to unlock it from the dash.

Haven't tried it out yet. I'll give it a shot tomorrow. It's supposed to be
90. If it is supposed to be backlit always, something is burned out. Are
those intuitive to change?

Yes, there should be backlighting at all times. I suspect you have a bulb (or 
two) out.

Even with the air off, should there be some kind of a light on the
controller so it can be seen on the dash at night? Right now it is
completely dark. It just says OFF and it is not backlit at all.

This will be the first for many getting-to-know-my-new-to-me-98-e300
questions.
