[MBZ] Another oil thread

2022-07-01 Thread mitch--- via Mercedes
Might have something to do with prices I found on normally cheap grade
fluids after Curt's tractor transmission thread.

My local oil expert says:

Motiva and Chevron being down at the same time will turn the group 2
market on its head.

But most places are stocking up from what I can tell.

However it’s going to make group 3 products a bargain.

Group 2 products are your “conventional” products. Hydraulic oils, gear
oils, non full synthetic motor oils.

Group 3s are considered full synthetics in the US.

Most of the olive oil is cut with cheaper stuff. And not suitable for high
temps.

Couple of interesting links, one with a book reference by the guy who wrote
the original article in 2007:

https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/olive-oils-dark-side

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2007/08/13/slippery-business

Reminds me of my no undergrad days doing Mass spectrometry work on soil
vegetation samples. One of the subcontractors we interacted with in Boston
was a private shop doing isotope analysis for the orange juice industry.
The orange growers association was having a problem with fake orange juice
from concentrate being passed off as fresh-squeezed. Unfortunately for the
criminals, the oxygen Isotopes in fresh-squeezed were different from the
oxygen isotope ratios in the water that was being used to reconstitute the
concentrate. It was therefore easy to tell the difference. Further, the
mass spectrometry analysis company was doing work for both the orange
growers and the criminals, such that they were able to observe the
criminals adding the correct ratios of oxygen Isotopes to the reconstituted
fake orange juice so that it would be indistinguishable on testing.

When there is enough money at stake, criminals can get pretty fancy.

Wife came home with a bottle of 65%avocado and 35%olive oil yesterday. We
tried it today for mushrooms to accompany the steak, and I couldn't tell
the difference between it and the 50/50 butter/olive oil she usually does.
It was on sale for just a little more than the usual olive oil.

And now you have several grades of M1, ranging from $20 a jug to $40 a jug...
But Castrol really had it made 25 years ago, with Syntec (blended/hydrocracked)
selling in most stores for a dollar a quart more than Mobil One, when Mobil One
was still fully synthetic.

In the interest of ramping up a good "oil thread", I'll posit the
following.

My current information re synthetic oils is that it is not
hydroscopic, and

has no materials contained within it that reacts with water, thus remains
un-contaminated longer. Also, because of being a "manufactured
compound" it

doesn't react with carbon and fuel oil by products generated by
combustion...

Dino Oil, on the other han*d, is reactive *with water and fuel oil by

The thought is that oil develops acids from interaction with moisture while
just sitting there due to temp/humidity changes. Change the oil per the
calendar just to keep corrosion down. I do put ASL's Camguard (
https://aslcamguard.com/) in it to keep the cams from rusting - a highly
recommended procedure from the aviation community for engines flown less
than once a week.
I need to look up that report from the oil analysis guys that showed very
little difference between oils. Perhaps cheap oil and Camguard instead of
the M1 that it's been getting.

If I was changing my oil every 2500 miles in Oklahoma, I'd use
https://www.walmart.com/ip/SuperTech-5W30-Motor-Oil-5-Quart/16474403

If I drove a gas engine truck 2500 miles a year in Oklahoma, running it over a
half hour every time I used it, I'd put 5w-30 or 0w-40 Mobil one in it, change
the filter every 24 months, and change the oil every 10k mi.

Why would you want that oil for your F150?

The late Roger E. would not change his Porsche Mobil 1 oil annually, he waited
for the mileage limit.

I expect you are right but he will have the oil filter up top. So, if
the gasket was leaking the oil might leak out higher up than it would on
my engine.
However, having read some of the other posts, I am thinking that the
cooler hoses are the likely culprit and waiting to hear if it is true.

That is not an oil thread. That is a leak thread.

Have to think, the easy way is to use some spray engine cleaner, hose it off
and then put some new oil in and fire it up.
What sort of vehicle and engine are we talking about?

Might you have blown a gasket on the oil filter housing or something like that?
Or, might something of that nature have come loose?

I had a persistant drip of oil after I changed oil a year or more back and
thought I had not tightened the plug sufficiently. Tried tightening it twice
before I realized it was the filter housing that needed to be tightened.
My car is a 115 so old enough not to have the oil filter that can be changed

I know it wasn't a pinhole, the oil was full and the engine bay dry when I
(and 8 cub scouts) checked it on Sunday, and there's no oil in my parking
spots at work or home. My motor mounts are iffy so I am hoping that is
it.

I will let all y'all* know when I have a diagnosis. Can I get oil cooler
lines at flaps, or will I have to order them?

[MBZ] Another oil thread

2013-04-12 Thread Tim Crone
I came off the interstate (a few miles but it was hot) and noticed that I
was idling at 15. That's a bit low but not crazy low. Oil is ~500 miles.

I started driving again - no driving issue, but pressure gauge was jumping
from 15-30. I pulled into a gas station, opened hood - the entire driver
side of the engine was covered in oil. Massive loss.

I saw nothing terribly obvious, but I was wearing work clothes and there
was no way to do any good diagnosis. Got it towed home (thanks AAA!) and
how it's been in the driveway since Tuesday. It is still dripping oil, but
I can't tell if it's from the mess in the compartment settling or from the
breech.

I'm going to have to get into it this weekend. Any suggestions where to
start, if I don't see anything obvious? Should I just dump in oil and see
if it leaks out the head, or is there a better way?

Thanks,
Tim

That is not an oil thread. That is a leak thread.

Have to think, the easy way is to use some spray engine cleaner, hose it
off and then put some new oil in and fire it up.

What sort of vehicle and engine are we talking about?

Might you have blown a gasket on the oil filter housing or something
like that? Or, might something of that nature have come loose?

I had a persistant drip of oil after I changed oil a year or more back
and thought I had not tightened the plug sufficiently. Tried tightening
it twice before I realized it was the filter housing that needed to be
tightened.
My car is a 115 so old enough not to have the oil filter that can be
changed from up top.

On one of my 123's the oil line failed as a result of motor mount failure. This
appears to be common. The drivers side motor mount collapses and the power
steering belt contacts the oil cooler hose, wearing a hole in it. It will be
obvious. To change out the oil cooler lines you pretty much have to remove the
motor mount, so what a great opportunity to do both. Soak the ends of the oil
cooler lines with AeroKroil or PB Blaster for several days before you start and
they should come off easily. Also a ball end 6mm Allen socket will help getting
the motor mount off.

Re: [MBZ] Another oil thread

2013-04-12 Thread Curt Raymond
You don't mention what car but I had this happen on my '83 240D. I was cruising
down the highway and the oil pressure gauge went all crazy. I pulled over,
popped the hood and the top of the engine was coated in oil. Pulled the
dipstick and there was just a drip on the end of the stick. I had a couple
quarts with me so I added them which brought the level up to just over the low
mark. I drove it home and added more oil and drove it for another 2 years.

Never did figure what had gotten into it...

Thanks,
Tim

cover the delicate parts and clean the engine bay. Brake cleaner can be your
friend, as well as the foamy engine cleaner stuff. Lower pressure (garden
hose) hot water wash to remove the oil and dirt should give a much better view
of where you have a problem. I am going to bet it is an oil pressure line with
a pin hole that over time was able to empty the pan enough for the pump to not
be able to suck up enough oil.

Re: [MBZ] Another oil thread or sorts - leaking

2013-04-12 Thread clay
Randy, I would be surprised if a bottom filter like that could coat the engine
bay. Top side oil filter would have made a very obvious mess. Forgetting to
put the oil cap on the valve cover really makes a huge mess of things and will
cause long term oil seeping unless fully washed. Oil cooler line would spray
it back and might allow the fan to disperse it in a manner one would find hard
to pin point.

That is not an oil thread. That is a leak thread.

Have to think, the easy way is to use some spray engine cleaner, hose it off
and then put some new oil in and fire it up.
What sort of vehicle and engine are we talking about?

Might you have blown a gasket on the oil filter housing or something like
that? Or, might something of that nature have come loose?

I had a persistant drip of oil after I changed oil a year or more back and
thought I had not tightened the plug sufficiently. Tried tightening it twice
before I realized it was the filter housing that needed to be tightened.
My car is a 115 so old enough not to have the oil filter that can be changed
 from up top.

Dieselvolk,

Just got back on Saturday from a business trip to New England and back, drove
my '87 wagon and put on about 1700 miles.  It's now time for an oil change, but
I cannot find Mobil 1 15W-40 or 0w-40 at the usual places.  Where are folks
getting their M1 these days?

Also, during the homebound leg, the low oil light came on for a few minutes, so
I checked the level during the next rest stop, and after only sitting for about
10 minutes, the oil registered at the midway point on the dipstick (normal
point for the low oil level light to start activating on my car).  I was
surprised that it (Mobil 1 15w-40) had drained back into the oil sump so
quickly!

Does anyone else find that their M1 drains back quickly in OM60x engines
vs.OM61x?  Marshall used to say that one must wait 6 to 8 hours to get an
accurate oil reading using M1 in an OM61x engine, and I guess I assumed that
the same applied to an OM60x engine.

Very respectfully,

A
couple times a month they'll do 5 quarts plus an oil filter for $29.95.
I get a filter for my Ranger, when I get the oil changed on that Speedee will
take $5 off if I bring my own which brings my total cost to $24.95 for 5 quarts
so I figure thats a pretty good deal.
Oh and if you join the rewards program for every 5 $20 purchases they give you
$20 in rewards so figure thats $4 more off...

Re: [MBZ] Another Oil Thread

2010-04-07 Thread LarryT

Hi Max,
I got 15W40 Turbo/Diesel M1 recently at AutoZone in the Diesel section.
They only had quart bottles though...

Not sure why Marshall said it takes so long - I've found it to return pretty
quickly.

BTW, I usually put 6 qts. of 15W40 and top it off with 15W50. I like the
readings I get at idle with that mix.

Good luck --

Dieselvolk,

Just got back on Saturday from a business trip to New England and back,
drove my '87 wagon and put on about 1700 miles. It's now time for an
oil change, but I cannot find Mobil 1 15W-40 or 0w-40 at the usual
places. Where are folks getting their M1 these days?

Also, during the homebound leg, the low oil light came on for a few
minutes, so I checked the level during the next rest stop, and after
only sitting for about 10 minutes, the oil registered at the midway
point on the dipstick (normal point for the low oil level light to start
activating on my car). I was surprised that it (Mobil 1 15w-40) had
drained back into the oil sump so quickly!

Does anyone else find that their M1 drains back quickly in OM60x engines
vs.OM61x? Marshall used to say that one must wait 6 to 8 hours to get
an accurate oil reading using M1 in an OM61x engine, and I guess I
assumed that the same applied to an OM60x engine.

Oil level lights are notoriously inaccurate. Circuit has sensor, some type of
timer relay etc.

M1 oil is like lemon juice when hot. About 90% will be in the pan after 5
minutes, the last teacup full will be tenacious and take many hours to drain to
the pan. That is why I usually change my oil stone cold on all my cars.

YMMV

Rather irritating, sometimes Mt. P Wal-Mart's have diesel rated M1 in
stock and I'll buy up all they have on the shelf (all 2 or 3 bottles)
and then six months later they'll be out of stock for weeks and weeks.
I've mentioned it to the workers and even a manager and the reply is
always it should come in on the next truck but maybe someone else is
buying all that up before I get there.

My oil level sensor has been pretty consistent, when the level reaches
the mid-way point on the stick it will start activating (stay on for a
minute or two), and when it finally comes on and stays on the level is
all the way down to the bottom mark or 'add' mark. It takes a month or
so (1500 miles or more) to drop to the 'add' mark and so I now just add
a quart when it starts to blink.

I used to only change my M1 oil on stone cold engines, but now I'm
beginning to wonder if that is really necessary on OM60x engines.

My oil level sensor has been pretty consistent, when the level reaches
the mid-way point on the stick it will start activating (stay on for a

all the way down to the bottom mark or 'add' mark. It takes a month or

only sitting for about 10 minutes, the oil registered at the midway
point on the dipstick (normal point for the low oil level light to start
activating on my car). I was surprised that it (Mobil 1 15w-40) had
drained back into the oil sump so quickly!

Does anyone else find that their M1 drains back quickly in OM60x engines
vs.OM61x? Marshall used to say that one must wait 6 to 8 hours to get an
accurate oil reading using M1 in an OM61x engine, and I guess I assumed
that the same applied to an OM60x engine.

Very respectfully,

No, Marshall! What Would Marshall Do?!? Probably label this as a
'feature' and advise fixing the oil leaks and oil burning (but
rebuilding the head to fix the valve stem seals would not be allowed).

[MBZ] Another oil thread

2006-10-25 Thread Curt Raymond
So to keep fires burning...

I got my latest oil analysis this week, went a shade over 8,000 miles before
testing. Larry says 113ppm iron is cause for concern but everything else looks
fine.
I counter that the last check was at 7,000 some miles and iron was around
130ppm so we're seeing a much slower rise in iron per oil change.
My theory is that the iron we're seeing is from carbon being released. The
engine in my car ('85 190D 2.2l) was seriously carboned up when I first got it
and 16,000 miles later its gotten alot better but still has some way to go. As
the carbon gets more cleaned up I should see fewer problems with high iron
level.

Anyway, thats the theory, what say you?

I'll preface this by saying I know next to nothing about oil analysis, but -

Why would carbon buildup, which I'm guessing is comprised mostly of carbon
(C), contain any iron (Fe)?

Isn't the the block of a 2.2 cast iron? If so, then it wouldn't it seem to
be a more likely place for iron to get into the oil?

Just a thought,
Mike

Re: [MBZ] Another oil thread

2006-10-25 Thread Curt Raymond
I don't have a good answer for you...
I have some theories.
#1 As carbon collects it grabs some iron thats floating around in the engine.
Grabs is the wrong word, the iron collects with the carbon. Then when the
carbon is released the iron is also but while the carbon blows out of the
engine the iron sneaks down into the oil.

#2 As the carbon blows out of the engine bits of iron that it was attached to
flake off and sneak down into the oil.

#3 Due to poor maintenance on the part of the previous owner (there lots of
other more obvious examples of this) sludge has collected in the oil pan which
is slowly being released into the engine by the detergent action of the clean
oil I'm using thus releasing iron that was trapped in the sludge.

I've been considering something like Auto-Rx or Amsoil's Engine Flush to get
the crud out more quickly, but based on the last result I'm tempted to just
change the oil and test again at 8,000 miles. I suspect (hope) I'll see an even
slower rise in iron this time and maybe after another change or two iron levels
will stay in normal territory.
