2017-06-12 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Nothing yet... I asked the auction house for a VIN and photos of the
engine. Also if it's running and if they have a title.

After some careful research, I determined that the shifter couldn't be
original in this car. Which means possible engine swap, which kills it for
me.

Let's see what they respond with.

Re: [MBZ] Anybody in indiana?

2017-06-10 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Rick, I might indeed be very interested here. I'd need someone to lay eyes
on this before I can put in an absentee bid in, and send me some photos via
their phone to assess if its rusty, or has been rusty in the past. Also if
it runs, which would make transportation much easier. If I did indeed win,
then it has to be removed the same day, so I would need to organize a
rollback to bring it somewhere local where it can sit for a week or two
before a transporter can get it to NJ for me.

I could cover any costs and time, etc of course. Is this something you
could help out with?

Thanks,
Jaime

Re: [MBZ] Anybody in indiana?

2017-06-10 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
So lets see here...

- Its a W108, which means steel suspension. All W109s had air suspension
and were also long well base, so would have been a 300SEL. So this is
certainly a W108.
- The only W108 called 300SE was a 1965-67 production with the big M189
aluminum 6 cylinder.
- this is a euro car, probably titled as a 1967 but late 1967 production.
It clearly has all the MY 1968 bits, which I fit a bit odd. (Strip of MB
tex across the dash, large safety switch knobs, side markers). According
to Nitske, only 534 of these were built in all of 1967. Add in the late
1967 production features, the manual transmission, and the green color, I'd
say this becomes a very rare car.
- Some research of the EPC states that chassis number 2590 was the first to
have all these safety features in the interior, so the last 147 cars (given
a production of 2737 units)... rare indeed.

M189 is my favorite engine in these cars... Very powerful, especially at
the higher revs. Blows away a 280SE with its injected M130 and it much
lighter feeling than the bloated 4.5s. However, cost of repair limits
ownership. Water pump is shared with the gullwing and currently lists for
$1120. And they all typically leak by this point. And if the engine is
shot, Metric Motors can rebuilt it for about $20k, but warns that pricing
is on a case by case basis and new parts for the head can run upto $14,500
alone. In otherwords, you have to be crazy to want a car like this, which
means its perfect for me.

I happen to have a 1967 W109 300SEL parts car out in my driveway (which my
wife is finally asking about moving after its been there for the last 3
months). It has a M189 which turns free and will probably run. Its also a
very rare US car, which they only imported about 300 of. But its very
rusty and moldy. I feel bad parting it, but it might be justified if it
saves a more solid car.

So maybe I should be interested in this car. I mean, in the end, who else
would save it?! The biggest issue here is now purchase price (it has to be
cheap, since so much can be wrong here), and getting it to NJ. But its not
to far.

Jaime
