[MBZ] Anybody watch Mythbusters? Just tested WVO in SD

2007-07-12 Thread Zoltan Finks
I have gotten to really like this show on Discovery channel. Now that
this channel is included in my limited basic cable package.

They just were testing fuel mileage myths. They tested several wacky
contraptions they found - mostly on the net - that were supposed to
improve MPG. I think only one worked and improved 6%.

But later they tested the myth that a diesel can run on discarded
cooking oil. They used an SD. They just filtered it (wish they told us
how) and ran it out of a translucent plastic jug they mounted up by
the windshield.

They were quite surprised that with no car modifications it could run
the car. It got 30 mpg at a steady 35 mph - compared to 33 mpg with
dino.

Also, it's amazing to me that sometimes automotive knowledge can be so
separate from other engineering knowledge. These are two very
knowledgeable guys in lots of different areas of engineering, but
neither of them could find the fuel line on a couple of different
cars.

Also: Kaleb: just a note to let you know that somehow I seem to have
been removed from the biodiesel list. What should I do to rectify
this?

Yes but are they really knowledable or just a couple of actors playing the
part?
It's one thing to read a script but quite another to know something about
what goes on under the bonnet of a car.
Sort of like when the nasty aliens actually invade earth, are Bruce Willis,
Arnie, Mel Gibson and Co going to get together and beat then back?

Yeah but we are not talking about rebuilding a MB gearbox, just finding the
fuel pipe. If you have a basic understanding of how a car gets it's fuel you
should be able to work out which is the feed pipe and which is the return
line.
Anyway they seem like nice fellas, if they had the big ego thing happening
they would have edited out the part about them standing there looking for a
fuel line.

That exactly the what straight Veggie/Bio should deliver. It has 10%

WOW, 100% vegoil without pre-heating? You're REALLY asking for
trouble. I give
you 10,000 miles at MAX before you have injection pump, injectors,
pre-chamber,
or ring problems. There are major engine problems running 100% vegoil when
it's preheated to 150F or higher, let alone running it at ambient temps
Once you start having these problems, Italian Tuneup's won't even help.
The MB/Bosch injection system is pretty well bullet proof, but it
cannot handle
the missile you've launched.

Actually, the red hair guy was ... or at leas an aspiring actor way
back. At one time they showed an old clip of him in one of the old
Charmin toilet paper commercials, he was the young shop clerk working in
Mr Whipple's store in the ' please don't squeeze the Charmin'
commercial...with a lot more hair.

That aside, they do an incredible job of trying to piece these things
together, even if they aren't up to snuff for the purists in any given
episode, and they're loads of fun to watch.
