Remember that Toyota is poised to surpass GM as the largest automaker on the
planet.
Thats Toyota, Lexus and Scion vs Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Pontiac, Cadillac,
Hummer, Saab, and Saturn.

Wasn't it also the crazy chairman of Toyota (could have been Honda) that said
to save GM they'd raise prices on each car...

Also lets point out that Toyota makes money, Ford doesn't...

Fine, so the reporter is playing games with the statistics, likely he
should have picked a comparable Ford SUV, versus a monster Ford
vehicle.
However it's clear from the number less folks are pulling boats this
month because few boat pulling expeditions have been bought.

Compare the weight of the two trucks and I bet you'll find out why.
Pickups have really porked up over the years, mostly because of a demand
for more interior comfort and better handling.

Yep. We had a '73 Ford F100, 360 2bbl C4 that got 11-13 for the most
part. Replaced it with a '76 GMC 2500, 350/350 4bbl that got about the
same. 23mpg would be one mpg more than we got on the hwy with a stick
shift 250 straight six '77 Nova. The F100 and Nova were bought new.
I can't believe Chebby made 1981 emmissions on a 5.7L auto tranny
truck with more mpg than that manny tranny '77 Nova.

Ain't that the truth. My '88 GMC S15 2.8l was underpowered on the highway but
regularly turned in 25mpg and was great in the woods.

My wife is going from a 3 mile commute to about 15 miles and I'm a bit
concerned about her spending everything she makes in fuel (well not that bad
but you get the idea). She drives my Dakota which does around 18mpg. Theory 1
has me making my own frankenheap but my 240D only averaged around 28mpg which
would barely pay for the added insurance and fees although it'd be handy to
have a 3rd car.
The other idea is to buy a new vehicle, something small that gets better
mileage. Gotta be 4wd so I can tow my snowmobile trailers and go to camp. Best
thing I've found so far is a Suzuki Vitara or Chevy Tracker 2 door convertable.
Those are rated for 26mpg on the highway which is okay but I'm not sure its
better enough to make it worth buying another vehicle while my Dakota still has
plenty of miles in it...

Sure! Put a Cummins 6B in it and it will. The cost increment is
about $4k, IIRC, and it weighs 1000# so the front end needs a bit
of beefing up.

Funny things Dakotas. My '96 Dakota v8 club cab will just nudge 20mpg if I
really baby it on the highway. Worst I ever did was 8mpg towing a 4400# tractor.

Thinking now to run it until the 318ci quits and then stuff a 4BT into it. Lose
100HP gain 100+lb/ft torque.

I wish I could do that. Unfortunately our organization is located in two

that I haul the clients from one building to the other, or accompany them to

What's a diesel Excursion get?
Can it match an automatic F250? (probably not)

I'm 95% sure Jim was talking about his Cummins/Dodge 2500.
When you look at the number of cars rated at 40+ mpg hwy 25 years ago vs
today,
it's pretty pathetic. OTOH, nobody seems to want a car with the
performance

of a 1.6L Escort today.
