Cool. I just saw many folks repeating what I had said, perhaps slightly
differently.

Yes, Rick. I will draw on your knowledge if I decide to tear into this thing.
Still thinking what I want to do.

Yep. There is even a Subaru owner or two on this list.
This is my favorite part of older cars, the common problems are already
figured out for you. If you can Google the answers are there waiting.
Pulling the dash pod on the 2015 Jetta was a bit nerve wracking as I couldn't
find instructions for a Mk7 car, fortunately its the same as the Mk6.

Yup. Snarky subpar Subaru comments aside, I have experienced the cafe au lait
oil only once before and it was in a Mercedes. No fault of the Mercedes though-
long term use of water in place of coolant resulted in head corrosion.

I agree with Curt. This is a known issue with these cars, so there should be
tons of resources on how to deal with it on the interweb. At this point you
really have nothing to lose.

Fix it. You've hit the most common problem with that car, correct that and you
should be good for many miles of motoring...

Bob,
There isn’t a person here who hasn’t read your messages and thought, "I’ve been

That means timing belt, too. Change all the idlers while you're there. Of

with that additional info, there is no doubt you have water getting into

The weird thing is I took it to the red line heat wise one day two weeks ago,

if the oil has been changed anytime in the last year, i doubt it is from
condensation. Head gasket, crack in head, or carack in cylinder is
allowing coolant into the oil pan. Oil + water + emulsifiers in oil =
white butter in the crankcase.

Start engine, remove radiator cap, observe coolant level. If head gasket
is leaking the coolant will surge. If it's only a little leak, you will see
a little surge as engine comes to operation temp... If it's really leaking,
the surging will happen quickly.
Alternate method. Mount pressure gage ad

Is it driven mostly for short trips - where it doesn't ever really warm up?
Could be condensation in the crankcase, that then gets whipped up into
"motor butter".

Time to pull the head and see if you need a head gasket or worse.
