Mine takes the 15 mph speed humps on a nearby street pretty
comfortably at 25 mph, but that provokes an interesting set of noises

As far as I understand, the Bilsteins/Boge shocks are damped in both
directions of travel whereas the crappy aftermarket ones aren't.
Read that somewhere via a link from someone on this list in the last year.

I can vouch for Marshall's experience. I've owned 15 Mercedes and have

Shocks aren't really shocks. They are motion dampers that absorb the up

heat. Just drive your car a few miles then pull over carefully touch one of

Go with the Bilsteins and if possible and you can find them Sachs or Boge are
just as good

My 83' 300D has Gabriel's that the previous owner must have put in. What's
the opinion on these?
This being my first Benz, I'm thinking it rides about like it should (kind of
big and smooth, kinda like a boat), but I wouldn't mind a lot of firming up.
I like the car more solid feeling.

My 116 came with worn out, 2-3 year old, low mileage Sears shocks on it.
Probably Monroe or Gabriel products. One of the backs was devoid of fluid,
letting the tire dribble like a basketball. The other three aren't as good
as 150kmi Bilsteins.
I think I get the idea! I shopped around, and the cheapest I could get the
Bilsteins for was around $80. I talked to my mechanic, and he said he would do
it for what I would pay for just the shocks.I'll be back to driving the 80
SD, and my kid has been warned not to tear up the 84 SD.
Just for the record, a Bilstein just failed after six months of service on
one of my 300 SDLs. The drivers side front started leaking oil but seemed
to have not lost any performance.
The amazing Gary had a new one on my porch the next day and the old one has
been returned for warranty credit.
I have a pair of Monroe's on the front of my 240D - compared to the
Bilsteins, the Monroes are almost half the diameter of the Bilsteins!!I
plan to replace them shortly.

My kid is tearing up my 80 300SD. The latest is a broken shock. It
looks like the bottom washer on the top mount broke, and the top of the
shock is sticking up about 4 inches. The Monroe shocks are about a
third the price of the Bilsteins. Is it really going to matter in a 25
year old car?

The Monroes will ride substantially worse than the worn out shocks you
have now. Bilsteins, even with abuse, should oulast your son's
interest in the car.
BTDT, will NEVER do it again. You'd be better off to weld the shocks
solid and use the tires for bounce -- at least you wouldn't expect

Nothing but they're harder to find and usually (but not always) more
