That part would appear to be alright. I have yet to take the valve cover off
so I am judging by only the one lobe -
I need to order some stuff like a valve cover gasket etc., before I get into
this. Spring is coming soon hopefully
and the weather will warm to the point where I can get into the garage and
enjoy working on it. Doing it in the
cold is only good for the situation where one has no real choice. I may be
there this weekend with the 4Runner as
something is loose in the front end. Hopefully a tie rod end or two will be
the worst case scenario. In any event,
I have felt the cam lobe through the oil fill hole in the valve cover and it
does not show any signs of roughness.

Randy,

Any abnormal wear that I've seen has also affected the lobe finish. The key
is that the cam lobe surface should be very smooth.

Not to hijack this thread but on a similar note . . .

Looking for some input from those with experience with the older engine in
my 76 300D 115. The engine is a 617.910.

The question is - how sharp of a point is acceptable on the cam lobe? My
recollection is that I read somewhere that
one way to guesstimate the quality of an engine before purchase was to reach
in through the oil filler hole in the
cam cover and feel the cam lobe to see how sharp the point is.

I saw photos on a website (Mercedessource) showing chain stretch
measurements using a dial indicator and I believe
it to be showing a newer engine in a 124 perhaps. At any rate, the cam lobes
on that engine appeared rounder than
they appear to be on my engine. So I have become curious as to whether there
is a difference between the engines
or if that might not be a good sign for my engine?
