as others have mentioned, the shifter bushings have fallen out. I believe there are2 or maybe 3 of them. Each is just a hard plastic grommet that snaps into a hole in the linkage. The parts are only a couple of $$s each but accessing them can be difficult especially if laying on a cold conc

Many thanks, folks. I seem to remember that a special tool is needed or one can be assembled out of washers and a (bolt?) I tried to replace those same bushings on the '83 240D stick-shift without success, but still have the bushings which might be the same since both cars are '83 123s. Gerry

A few months ago my '83 300D would occasionally refuse to start. I would move the shift lever out of park, move it back into park, and then it would start. Yesterday the car rolled back when I put it in park. I can't get it to engage. I'm guessing the problem is in the linkage or the shift
