I pulled into the drive, put it in park, turned off the engine, and it
started to roll back.
Fiddled with the gear shift until it managed to start, fiddled some
more, and finally got it into gear.
Drove it behind the house and into the shop. Very lucky because working
on it in the driveway in t

believe there are2 or maybe 3 of them. Each is just a hard plastic
grommet that snaps into a hole in the linkage. The parts are only a
couple of $$s each but accessing them can be difficult especially if
laying on a cold conc
Many thanks, folks. I seem to remember that a special tool is needed or one
can be assembled out of washers and a (bolt?) I tried to replace those same
bushings on the '83 240D stick-shift without success, but still have the
bushings which might be the same since both cars are '83 123s.

A few months ago my '83 300D would occasionally refuse to start. I
would move the shift lever out of park, move it back into park, and then
it would start.
Yesterday the car rolled back when I put it in park. I can't get it to
engage.
I'm guessing the problem is in the linkage or the shift
