My boy drove the 79300TD delivering pizzas for a summer on the weekends for a local shop when we lived in Houston. He actually made some decent coin in tips as it was in an upscale area, bought fuel but didn’t pay the car ins etc. --FT Sent from iPhone > On Apr 24, 2021, at 8:25 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes > wrote: > > Exactly. > > My eldest did DoorDash for a while when he had a 1995 300D. Re: [MBZ] Cars For Numb Nuts was Re: OkieBoy's Birthday!
I also delivered for Domino's Pizza at about the same time. This was in the "30 minutes or it's free" days so we had a pretty confined delivery area, which included about half of IU campus (there was another store in town that had the other half). If you drove your own car, you got an hourly wage plus a percentage of your gross deliveries as a "commission." The commission was paid in cash every night, and was supposed to cover your car expenses. You also kept any tips. I honestly don't remember the wage and commission percentage anymore. Pay was a little above minimum wage, and the commission seemed like extra cash in your pocket especially if you had a fuel efficient car, but sooner or later you'd need tires, or brakes, or a starter, or have an insurance payment due, etc. so long term it was a wash for most drivers. Sometimes if you got lucky you'd get a lot of tips. I had nights where I had $75 in tips, but that was rare. Usually students did not tip, or maybe rounded up to the nearest dollar. The townies tipped pretty well in general. Strangely (I thought) the poor neighborhoods usually tipped well, and the wealthy neighborhoods were miserly. I delivered for them for a couple of years, using an air-cooled Beetle. Exactly. My eldest did DoorDash for a while when he had a 1995 300D. Now with a car like that you might actually been able to come out ahead, but with the crazy hours he had to work and the places he had to go (rarely contiguous areas between runs) I don’t see how he made any money. -D > On Apr 24, 2021, at 8:00 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes > wrote: > > Yeah hard for me to believe anyone is netting a regular $1000/week > delivering fast food, after accounting for gas, wear and tear, > insurance, etc. unless working crazy hours. > > I delivered pizza years ago and it was OK spending money for a single > kid and the cash tips could sometimes add up if you had a good night but > it really didn't net out to a whole lot more than minimum wage. > > It's important to have a reliable car that has already seen the bulk of > its depreciation. Yeah hard for me to believe anyone is netting a regular $1000/week delivering fast food, after accounting for gas, wear and tear, insurance, etc. unless working crazy hours. I delivered pizza years ago and it was OK spending money for a single kid and the cash tips could sometimes add up if you had a good night but it really didn't net out to a whole lot more than minimum wage. It's important to have a reliable car that has already seen the bulk of its depreciation.
