There is very little speed advantage except at the very high (and very short 
range) frequencies, which also do not penetrate glass or wood or brick/concrete.

I don’t see any real improvement in service any time soon, especially for rural 
areas.  1x was great for actual telephone service, as long as you were at least 
as close as a couple miles you got a strong signal.  I can see the Verizon 
tower from my house and never have more than three bars of signal strength….

5G is mostly marketing, and in an era when we should be reducing electrical 
consumption to reduce greenhouse gases, uses a lot more electricity to run.

Gotta love the toy business, eh?

As I understand, here are (at least) two parts to 5G.  The mm wave
that is very short range - but also 600 MHz.  T-mobile got a big
chunk of the formerly TV spectrum from 614-698 MHz.  And they have
been investing and building in rural areas with these
frequencies.  So T-Mobile coverage from 2 years could be quite
different than now.

More details: When phone shopping (probably for current Moto G7, not
certain) I noticed some model numbers were GSM only, some CDMA only, some
both some limited frequencies, etc.  The point is you need to check the fine
print and the long model number.

Exactly. My wife’s phone is supposedly 5g capable and will say it’s connected 
to 5g at the top but it’s really just LTE. 5g only works within a certain 
number of feet of the tower/source

Yes I was in Nebraska one time for a week and most of the middle of the state 
was not T-Mobile. I was connected to some local carrier but it worked just fine 
with no issues.

When I had Republic Wireless (Sprint piggyback, at the time) I don't recall any 
big problems with coverage, but maybe I just never went anywhere I would have 
experienced it. Republic does not (or did not, at the time) work in Canada or 
internationally, except for the WiFi calling of course, and that was good 
enough for my purposes.

I would still be on Republic but wife wanted a new phone and got some family 
plan deal with ATT. I'm along for the ride now. I don't like my ATT Samsung 
phone as much as the Motorola I had with Republic, and I don't know what it 
costs and it's not something I'm going to get mixed up in as it will only lead 
to discord.

I dislike mobile phones overall, and would rather not have one. But that's not 
compatible with modern mainstream life. Additionally it seems senseless to pay 
for both a landline at home and a mobile phone, so I have the mobile.

We tried t mobile several years ago and it was bad. No coverage. Since then 
they added a bunch of new towers and added some new frequency. We have been on 
them again for a couple of years and it has been great. You have to have a 
phone that is newer to access the new towers, iPhone 8 or newer for example.

Prior to 1982 it was AT&T.  Then broken up into the various 'baby Bells', and 
later
merged (partially) again.

Exactly.  DO YOUR HOMEWORK!  Pay attention to the fine print, details, etc.
Test.  Your mileage WILL vary!

When I 'work from home', not at home, I need decent data access, unlimited.
It has to work, and work wherever I am.  I have no 'office'.  I'm one (of two, 
now)
fully remote employees.  That gives me freedom to travel, but only if the gear 
works.

I pay $87/month for four (4) phones, three with pooled 3G of data, the fourth 
with unlimited data. They’re through out local ISP, Spectrum, which piggybacks 
on Verizon, so I have the same coverage as a Verizon customer.

There are plenty of deals out there cheaper than the major carriers, you just 
have to look around and see what’s there and who they’re buying bandwidth from.

Folks

I had bell south which became ATT for cell phones since 1989 probably to 2021

I was paying a lot …. Like maybe $225 including taxes for three smart phones 
and an iPad

I did a test of T-Mobile …. Ported one of my numbers to them and got a sim …it 
seemed fine in some of the remote places I go like Denmark, SC

Then I gave one of the numbers to it’s owner and told him to get his own 
service and I ended up with 2 smart phones and an iPad on T-Mobile … some 
unlimited magenta plan and after getting discounts for elderly and maybe a 
coupon or sale my rate is $90 for two iphones and an iPad  …. They will sell 
give you phones etc but I just bring my own

That price includes all taxes etc

Anyway after 6 months I’d say it’s 95% as good in my common locations which 
don’t have the best att either

I think I can text Mexico and Canada and maybe call them for free

Verizon is garbage where I live.  Both places.

Sitting in my SEA living room I have almost two bars.  Massive picture window 
with line of sight to the tower.  Using it as hotspot, there is almost 56k baud 
using USB cord.  Wireless hotspot is about 32k.

ANC is not that good either.  Verizon is new (roll out of 4G) to the market and 
coverage is spotty.  In the house I get almost three bars.  Do not need to use 
hotspot, so never did speed test.  As it is, the wifi (DSL) is almost as fast 
as using the phone itself for streaming.  The in air wifi on Alaska Airlines is 
really good for in flight streaming

Well, I'll add some info too.  I've used ConsumerCellular for a long time 
now and have not been disappointed.  Of my over 50 years dealing with 
businesses, they have by far the best customer service.  I use two older 
iPhones and they work fine on the road.  I use the ATT sims.  My home is in a 
low area so I only get 1 bar at home, but still useable.  I'm adding an outside 
antennae with inside booster to bring the inside signal up to 3-4 bars with my 
goal to drop my two land lines.  I tried WIFI calling via Tmobile, but it was 
terrible so I went back to the ATT sim.  I've ordered a stronger inside 
antennae to mate with the booster which should help even more.
Before CC, I had Verizon and their predecessor for over 10years.  Cost and fees 
finally forced me to change, plus their customer service was never good.

I’ve mentioned this previously and it’s probably not an option for Kaleb, but 
around here Spectrum (Charter bought out Brighthouse and this is their new 
name) piggybacks on VZW for $14/month for 1Gb or $44/month for unlimited data. 
You can BYOD for newer phones (iPhone SE or 6s is the oldest Apple stuff, don’t 
know about Android) so you’re not even obligated to buy hardware from them, 
although they do offer device contracts like other carriers.

That’s an all inclusive price, too. I’m covering four lines right now with a 
monthly cost of $56. Your data is polled among the devices, too, so if the 
usage is lopsided and one exceeds their limit you don’t get dinged as long as 
you haven’t exceeded the total.

 I've got Republic. All the new phones are GSM on T-Mobile which is not 
anywhere near as good as Sprint was. Its super spotty even in big cities like 
LA and New York. Around here its weird pockets. For instance I've got no 
service at all at camp, the phone says "no service" as opposed to the times it 
says "Emergency calls only". By the garage (50 feet uphill) I've got voice 
service and near the outhouse another 50 feet uphill I've got good LTE 
coverage. I see similar when I'm hunting, in just the right spot I'll have LTE 
but then 50 feet away I'll have nothing. Sometimes I have to put on airplane 
mode and then turn it off to get the phone to find signal.
I'm paying almost $40 with taxes, a comparable plan with Verizon would be more

My neighbor asked me about CC because she can get it cheap through AARP, so I 
looked into it last month. 
I didn't see any CC plans that I couldn't equal or beat with Red Pocket or 
Tracfone (now that Tracfone has monthly plans), and the AARP 5% off didn't 
change that. TF gives 5-10% off to anybody if they sign up for auto-renew. 

If T-Mo coverage is good enough for you, Mint has really great prices. 
One of my Tracfones is currently on T-Mo. Coverage sucks away from towns and 
freeways, but I do get some signal at home which I didn't 8 years ago. When 
it's working, it's faster than VZN but I can't seem to complete a phone call 
from my house without getting dropped. A couple months ago it took me several 
calls just to listen to my voice mails. 

All the MNVOs buy tower time from the majors, I forget who CC uses, but TF uses 
ATT,VZN,and T-Mo, RP uses ATT,VZN,T-Mo and Sprint. The only differences between 
MNVOs are whose towers they put you on and how easy they are to deal with when 
you need to change or fix something. RP has some really great deals on eBay if 
you're willing to use T-Mo or Sprint (is Sprint still considered better than 
VZN in California?). 

VZN pricing is much closer to MNVO pricing than it used to be, especially for 
heavy or unlimited users. You can get a better plan from VZN for $30 now than 
my niece used to pay $60 for (but they gave her a new phone every 24 months 
when she was paying $60).

We switched from Sprint / Ting to T-Mobile last year, happy so far. Family 
plan, unlimited data. I don't know about using both data and phone line at same 
time. We brought our own phones, right now two are Android, one iPhone. No 
rural use to speak of, so I can't help you there.

I have spent quite a few times comparing cell coverage maps. Vz isn’t best 
overall but T mobile came in a close 2nd. I may give them a try and if they 
don’t work where I need it I will move to VZ. I may check out CC.

When I was  on the road in the boonies, I had to have verizon, who 
delighted in ripping me for $200 to $300+ a month  (30¢ to 60¢ a min, 
unless someone from Canada called me when it was dollars per min)


CC has highly rated customer service (WAY better than Vz was) with 
people in the USA for whom Merkun English is the FIRST language (imagine 
that!) and has coverage anywhere ATT has service.   For the places I go 
now (Often still in the boonies) and nearly border to border, and 
Appalachia to west coast, the coverage is even better than vz.  within a 
few weeks it will be cost to coast to coast and border to border.   I 
expect no problems between the Appalachians to the east coast.


I continually had dropped calls and no service with Vz, and it is very 
rate with CC.    Even their spokesman dumped verizon.


I started with GTE, who had good service and competitive rates, and 
ended up with vz when they gobbled up GTE, and outrageously high 
rates.   I was never happier than when I kissed Vz goodbye forever.

IMHO, if you travel significantly you should stick with AT&T or Verizon.
We tried
T-Mobile, and almost from the first day it was unusable. Dropped calls 
when

crossing towers, random slowness due to 'foreign' towers, and the vaunted
fallback
to AT&T only happens when/where AT&T allows this, which is not everywhere.
(It's on a tower-by-tower basis, not a global policy.)

Basically my phone was only AT&T at home, which does NOT have the same
speeds and quantities that T-Mobile was advertising. And there was no
service
at my brother's, or the beach cabin, in spite of the coverage maps.

Bah.

The AT&T rep said that the alternate carriers are good, when you are 
in the

towns
they support, but as soon as you go any distance from there things fall
apart. For
actual coverage, only the big two have that.

T-Mobile is the Google-Fi carrier that covers here.  Fairly
dependable, but I can't speak for an actual T-Mobile account.
T-Mobile was the biggest single buyer of the 600 MHz TV spectrum
and they claim that their goal with the lease is to better cover
rural areas.

IMHO, if you travel significantly you should stick with AT&T or Verizon.
We tried
T-Mobile, and almost from the first day it was unusable.  Dropped calls when
crossing towers, random slowness due to 'foreign' towers, and the vaunted
fallback
to AT&T only happens when/where AT&T allows this, which is not everywhere.
(It's on a tower-by-tower basis, not a global policy.)

Basically my phone was only AT&T at home, which does NOT have the same
speeds and quantities that T-Mobile was advertising.  And there was no
service
at my brother's, or the beach cabin, in spite of the coverage maps.

Bah.

The AT&T rep said that the alternate carriers are good, when you are in the
towns
they support, but as soon as you go any distance from there things fall
apart.  For
actual coverage, only the big two have that.

I would add Republic to that list.  Especially if good Wi-Fi available where 
you spend the most time.

For a land line OOMA reduced my cost a lot ($50 to $15 a month) and provides 
additional useful features.

When I left my old job I had a company phone on Verizon. Signal was great for 
the most part but had a few dead zones in my area. When I left I kept my phone 
but not the number so I added a new line to our US Cellular account that I had 
for wife/kid. Data speed is ok but they are very regional with their network. 
If you go much outside the area you are on extended network. When on extended I 
have great signal but data only runs about .06 to .015mbps. In other words, not 
usable at all to conduct business with. Also, US Cellular does not have volte 
so when you are on a call it knocks your data out. This was no problem on 
Verizon. Since I am traveling more for work, this is not working. Last time I 
was out of town I called them and they had me change some settings on my phone 
and suddenly speed improves. I had already tried every sort of different 
setting before calling them. I think them did something on the back end. That 
was the last time I travels so since I have been home.

Last week on the way to Texas data speed was fine. When I got off the cruise to 
head back, data was back to slow on both my phone and wife phone. I called 
them. They first said you only had 400mb of LTE data on extended but said that 
if you spend over half your time per month on home network your data is not 
slowed when roaming. I told them I have not been traveling and wife never 
travels so we have been home over half the billing cycle. Rep then says she 
checked and our data was not slowed on their end so it just he the network we 
are roaming on. Yea right. I suspect it’s really the 400mb deal. 

Other part of the story. Before going on cruise I changed our plan to one of 
their new plans That includes so much talk and data in Mexico and Canada since 
we were going to be in Mexico. When we got to Mexico phone did not work at all. 
I found a WiFi network to chat their support. They set sorry it did not get 
setup before we left so would not work. Has to be done before we leave. When I 
talked to their rep when I got back they said you have to call them and tell 
the each time to turn on Mexico and Canada even though it is part of the plan. 
Then turn it off when you get back.

vacation at Yellowstone National Park when the beautiful Porkchop Geyser hot 
spring reminded him that he could use a good soak! But "hot-potting" is a 
forbidden delight, ruled off-limits for good reason: You will die.

Still, this was a college graduation trip. The Portland resident thought his 
edjumacation conferred the smarts to know when to break a rule. So Colin left 
the boardwalk and cruised up a hill in search of a private hot-pot soaking 
spot. In this area of the park, thin mineral crusts that resemble solid ground 
conceal scalding water pools! But he avoided these unseen pitfalls and found a 
secluded spring.

Recorded on unreleased video, Colin is seen reaching down to check the 
temperature, slipping, and falling into the boiling acidic water. That was the 
beginning of the end.

Chemistry students will be familiar with the properties of a turbulent hot acid 
solution. A significant amount of rapid dissolving was underway while recovery 
workers were struggling with dangerously unstable ground and a lightning storm. 
When they reached the spring the next day, the water had finished her work. 
There were no remains remaining!

Park Superintendent Dan Wenk stated the obvious, "This tragic event must remind 
all of us to follow the regulations." College graduates are no exception. The 
Darwin Awards sincerely hopes this misadventure will serve as a warning to

For voice quality, nothing beats a land line. For cell phone security, nothing 
beats a BlackBerry. Hence, I still have a land line, and this is being typed on 
a BlackBerry. ‎

Most "apps" are actually mobile Web sites, so if I want, say, the KBB "app", I 
save a link on the desktop of the phone. All of the apps on the BlackBerry have 
permissions, however the user can turn them off, or on, at his or her 
discretion.

Here's my opinion: 

 

I use a cell phone when I am driving.  Sometimes, I turn around and gets
things out of the back seat and steer with my knees.  Sometimes I shave
in the car while smoking a pipe or cigar and writing notes and talking
on the cell phone.  Now that I have the pimp daddy olds 98 (with a
million buttons on the dash) I can check my instant mileage, battery
volts, ETA, miles to destination, current time, temperature, oil life
indicator, and I can adjust all the mirrors while smoking a cigar,
talking on the cell phone, steering with my knees and trying to find
that french fry I just dropped between the seats.  Good thing I have
those steering wheel controls other wise I wouldn't have a free had to
check my call waiting on my cell phone.  

 

I do not have the driving experience that many of you possess and will
therefore not pontificate about how much I have driven.  I will however
say, that I often use my cell phone for conference calls while driving.
I have for a long time. I am 33. I had one wreck when I was 16 exactly
one week after I got my license.  I spilled my drink because my old 1978
olds Delta 88 did not have a cupholder. I looked down and the next thing
I knew I had run a light and t-boned a new (at the time) mustang.  (As a
side note, I totaled that poor mustang. I pushed the passenger door in
so far they could not open the glove box, broke the front axle, bent the
frame, and flattened the passenger tires.  I had to replace the blinker
cover on the Oldsmobile - that's all.)

   Not so with Tracphone so long as you keep the service in 
place.  Costs about $100 per year for which you can get up to 300 minutes if 
you renew when they have special promotions.  Mine has far better 
coverage(it works in Canada) than my wife's Sprint deal.  Not for chatty 
people as it costs too much per minute, but great for emergencies and 
occasional use.

I was never going to get one until I was right behind three cars that
smashed into the inside barrier right after a short downpour.  We were on
I-75 (speedway) south of Lakeland FL and I had no way to get help.  Of
course someone else did, whew.

So I got a Tracfone to keep in the car, $100 a year with 100 minutes I
almost never use.  It was handy when Ivan came through Pensacola though.

I was never going to get one until I was right behind three cars that
smashed into the inside barrier right after a short downpour.  We were on
I-75 (speedway) south of Lakeland FL and I had no way to get help.  Of
course someone else did, whew.

So I got a Tracfone to keep in the car, $100 a year with 100 minutes I
almost never use.  It was handy when Ivan came through Pensacola though.
