Curt brings up a good point.  The harder the pads (ceramic) the more likely
they are to squeal, AND the more they wear your rotors.

I can get 200 to 300k out of rotors with the cheap (dusty) pads.  it is easy
to change pads and cheap, it is harder and expensive to change rotors.

Ceramic pads DO have to be broken in properly to work properly and also to
 not warp your rotors.

The ceramic pads of the dogde and the rotors needed to be changed at a little
 over 100k.  Mucho dinero$$$

I've never had to buy rotors for my Mercedes with the organic or asbestos

I see no advantage, unless you have a show car and the dust is a significant
factor.  I see several DISadvantages to ceramic.

Thanks Rick,

It occurs to me that all the rear brake work on that truck has been done at a

time the friction material came loose from the shoe. Its way worse when they're

Put decent pads on there, usually fixes weird stuff.

Also make sure the axle seals are good -- differential lube on the

I have had ATE ceramics on my TE for a few months now and no dramas,
except for a bit of squeal when reversing down the drive.
Also getting a bit of slow braking ABS pulsing but not sure if the pads

It's getting close to needing to do a few jobs on the S124, so will

The ceramic pads sometimes work fine and sometimes grab and jerk worse

may be fine, or may be jerky on soft, moderate or hard braking. Very
disappointing. Sometimes the jerking is so bad the front tire comes
off the ground and it feels like something in the front end could break.

Let up and hit the brake again, and it may be smooth, less jerky or bad.

very disappointing performance. I am not sure if new rotors, and this
breakin procedure would perform correctly or not. I don't think that
if I spent the money for rotors that i'd want to spend the $$$ for
ceramic pads again.

What I do know is that the cheap pads from flaps are very good for
normal use. They are dusty, but no jumping, and no ruining rotors.

I am not impressed so far with ceramic pads.

As I understand, bedding the pads is necessary with all materials.

Here is the best article I've found on the chemistry, metallurgy, and physics
involved.

Regardless of pad composition, if both disc and pad are not
properly broken in, material transfer between the two materials
can take place in a random fashion - resulting is uneven
   deposits and vibration under braking.

Thanks for the link.

I recall reading this guy's write up a few years back when trying to remember
the proper procedure for bedding pads.

Good stuff.

It is.

You might get lucky - but the only way to be sure to avoid problems
is to bed the pads.
