Re: [MBZ] Cheap TD in LA CL

2007-10-17 Thread Curt Raymond

It was my first MB and before I'd ever gotten on this list. If I'd checked it
over real carefully knowing what I know now I'd never have bought it.

In fact if I'd done a prepurchase on either of the other two MBs I've owned
(both bought on eBay) I wouldn't have bought either. Would have missed out on
some adventures though...

Nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes...

Speaking of which I still have a 1985 300SD I am looking to get rid of, has
over 300k miles, still runs but looks its age. I also have a 500SEL with a
OM617 in it, runs and move still needs everything hooked up like AC. I am in
the Raleigh NC area if someone is interested. My wife wants both of them
gone...

Ahh yes the old buy a car for 300 and expect it to be flawless routine.
You got to consider that the 1500 you put into it, is what the average
car loses in depreciation per year.

I am not learning what needs to be screwed down to make the vibration
stop. Went under Gump and did the transmission mount as well as the
front hold down. No impact.

Will have to grasshopper on the car some more before I do more stupid
wrench tricks, like redo the whole front end.

It sounds like we're about even. They will both be $3500-$4K cars when

Re: [MBZ] Cheap TD in LA CL

2007-10-16 Thread EDWARD DENNIS
Hi,
300sd 1982 AZ. car purchased in Chicago for $1700. as a second owner 117,000
miles Maco 5 year old white with a nice black interior. Tires shot. Exhaust
hanging off.
I found an In. phone bill in the glove box.
2 motor mounts, right side lower arm strut rod bushing rebuild, 4 nice
wheels and Pep-boys tires 90% good, heater control used, rebuild kit for vacuum
pump,2 feet of vacuum hose, complete exhaust system flange back including
muffler, air cleaner and 3 mounts, fuel filter, oil filter, oil change, trans
filter, fluid change, B2 piston change, water pump and 4 belts, and charge the
a/c.
Still hot weather problems in stop and go traffic: vacuum and B2
issues??
No Cruise control. Rust repair blisters under side moldings, Trunk leaks
water. The fuel gauge always reads 3/4 or full when full. The turbo drain tube
leaks at the pan.
I have 120k on the car now. Purchased in June 2007. I have spent 20
hours on boards in one week to put the vacuum right. I also learn about the
wrong seals in the rebuild kit and used the old seals in the vacuum pump.
Will a longer B2 piston dog-bone help on hot days? Where to buy one?
B1??

Ed in Chicago $1700 + $1000 out of pocket so far. Drives great! 50
hours maybe??

This is true. My $1300 1983 300SD is now $2800 after $200 worth of seats
and $1300 for the suspension, turbo and other misc repairs. I still have
the AC compressor, vac lock pump and external water leaks to fix yet which
will add a few more hundred$s. Once all is sorted out, it will set me back
$4K or so. I do wish I had found a lower mileage example although this one
is a solid car.

2007-10-16 Thread Kevin Kraly
Nothing is worse for these cars than deferred maintenance. They will hit
you for double what the repair would have cost if it wasn't let go. For
example, if the AC compressor on my SD was replaced when it seized, it would
have cost little more than the compressor itself to straighten things out.
Now that moisture has entered the system, it will cost way more to fix plus
the cost of the compressor. At least I bought the car cheaply enough that I
can afford to put the investment in it to make it right. It would have been
nice to buy one that was perfect, but it would have cost me $4K at least,
and I didn't have it at the time.

Re: [MBZ] Cheap TD in LA CL

2007-10-16 Thread Tom Hargrave
You got it.

I've mentioned this to the group seveal times but I will again. I've
owned 17 Mercedes to date & the cheapest ones overall have been the ones
that I paid too much for up front.

And the reason? Everything worked & was in good shape in every "over
priced Mercedes" I bought. And every cheap Mercedes I bought cost me a
minimum of $2,000 in parts (each) the first year. I'm not saying that
nothing broke on the more expensive ones, only that there was much less
wrong with then when I bought them.

It doesn't help that I drive about 50,000 miles / year.

No air, no cruise, banged up, mileage unknown. I'd say it's a little
on the high side.
