kept its meaning, as did SL.
According to MB, E means Executive and C means Compact. SL of course means
either Sport Light or Super Light (I can't recall which but they are neither)
and I can't recall what S means,

S is Sport...which doesn't quite mean the same thing in German, hence SL
(Sport Leicht (Light)) for what we would call a Sports car.
