Re: [MBZ] Cool old 280S

2016-08-31 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
And the adjustment procedure is critical as far as following the steps. We’ve
had these discussions before, but most of the Zenith issues I encountered on
other people’s cars were due to them “tinkering” with settings. The setup and
adjustment procedure is very clear and methodical, and must be done in the
proper order for it to work correctly. Back in the day when carbs were more
common a lot of people had the tendency to “just turn that one screw a little
and it will be better” approach. Didn’t work for the Zeniths.

And once the secondaries opened you could watch your fuel gauge drop. That
being said, they really let that engine breathe well.

My 1970 250C was a really fun car, but it was a beater. I rescued it from a
City of Orlando impound lot where they sold it to me for the cost of some back
tickets, towing and storage fees. It had rust in the left front rocker, enough
that you could see light from the floor of the driver’s side. The rest of the
car was solid, so I threw some fiberglass over the hole, hit the whole area
with some POR-15, and drove the heck out of it.

It was the cream or off-white color that was so common in that time with a
tobacco interior. Great car, loads of fun. I once got it to nearly 130 MPH on
the I-280 south of San Bruno, great stretch of road for opening up the
throttle. I had just replaced the head gasket as it suffered from the coolant
leaks between the cylinders. Did the work in the basement garage of my
apartment in San Bruno with a minimal amount of hand tools. Had the manifolds
powder coated by a company that was one of my suppliers. It looked cool. Lots
of great memories with that car.

I don’t remember how good the mileage was. I just remember it didn’t bother
me. When they were tuned correctly, it was powerful and responsive. When they
were out of tune, not only was the mileage terrible, it drove poorly. It is
analogous to an old carburetor car that is clogged up with carbon. It just
felt like it was being bogged down.

My ’68 250S gets about 17 mpg (average driving, town and road) with Zenith’s.
If I drive over 70-75 or around town only, it’s a little less.

Once mine were set up properly, I’ve had no problems.

A pair of Zenith carbs, properly adjusted and balanced, will make a 250C pull
stumps.

"Normal" mileage in a 250C with properly set up carbs was in the low to mid
teens. I don't think I ever got better than 14-15 mpg in my 1979 250C on the
highway. Average was a little lower in the city.

Re: [MBZ] Cool old 280S

2016-08-31 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
My old 250 ran great when the carbs were in tune. But, it got very difficult
to find somebody that could set them up right. When they were out of sync or
tune or whatever the word is, the mileage was awful!
