The earlier heads on the 3.0 liter engines tended to crack when overheated.
I think they got it figured out by the #21 heads (though I might be wrong on
which number is which). Kaleb is correct, the 3.5 liter engines bent rods.

[MBZ] Crack heads versus rod benders

We are having a bit of an argument on the Ozbenz forum as to which 
engine had which problem, up for discussion is a 87 230TE which has had 
a OM603.912 installed, I seem to remember that these engines had some 
heads that where prone to cracking and another forum member reckons that 
the heads are OK but they bend the conrods. I am thinking that it was 
the larger 3.5 liter engine that had the conrod problems?
So which is it, as this comes up on this list now and again but I never 
pay attention cause I have neither of these engines.
