In my experience, they fail more frequently than pencil type. I always
spent the bucks to convert to pencil type/parallel glow plugs

I finally tracked down the hard starting problem with our brand new 74 240D.
It was starting fine, then one morning it suddenly took excessive cranking and
barely started. It had all the hallmarks of a bad GP as so often happens with
the W123s, so I immediately swapped all of them
