Very sorry to hear that.

So a VW diesel will only last about 200k miles or less?

Well keep in mind they are not as heavy duty and robust as a mb diesel.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel-less

2014-03-16 Thread Curt Raymond
Mine has 241,9something so thats clearly not true.

The dual mass flywheel is a known weak point. The suspensions seem to just come
apart all at once. Where a Mercedes around 200,000 needs (in my experience) a
ball joint and shocks from what I've seen online a Volkswagen needs all the
struts done. Either that or VW people are really good at ignoring how bad the
suspension is getting until they all of a sudden need a bunch of work. I'm
seeing a lot of people online with 2004-2006 cars in the same place Bob was at.
In no small part you get what you pay for. In '98 my Jetta still cost half of
what my 190D did in '84.

That said with the money put into it (other than the DMF that could be done
over time) thats still a $10k car. My '98 with its rust is still a $3k car...

That looks like it will be my one data point. I get that everything I
wanted to do was normal maintenance... except the flywheel. There were lots
of other fit and finish issues. Like it was said, it is a non-MB diesel
with 170K+ miles on it.

The TDI Passat cost half as much as the CDI E class, so lasting half as
long is to be expected. By the time I get 200,000 miles on the Passat at
7,000/yr., there will be something much more interesting. The Cessna gets
the long trips now, and I don't commute to work anymore.

[MBZ] Diesel-less

2014-03-15 Thread Bob Rentfro
For the first time since 1978, I am without a diesel in my driveway.
Strange. I traded the '06 Jetta TDI in on a '14 gas Jetta. It was time to
take the TDI in for its third timing belt (170K miles), motor mounts,
transmission mounts, transmission service. I hadn't driven it in awhile
(youngest daughter drives it regularly) so I jump in it to take it to the
shop and I could feel the struts were sketchy and there was a scary
non-cyclic rattle coming from somewhere. Crap. So I drop it off and ask
Indy boy to listen to my rattle. Turns out it was a familiar sound to
himthe dual mass flywheel crapping out. $800 parts, $750 labor. Added
to the other stuff I needed done I was up to $4000. Ugh. I then debated on
repair or replace. Youngest girl said she would be willing to pay the down
payment and make half the car payment if I got her the black on black with
black wheels Jetta she fell in love with. Funny thing, she chose the
cheapest one on the lot and she fanaggled the dude down on the wheels
ending up paying half price for them.
But the fact remains I'm diesel less. Boo.
