I’ve sold, but not bought.
Like any used car sale, it’s buyer beware and due diligence. Most of the
auctions I’ve seen are pretty transparent and get seriously vetted by the
peanut gallery, but as with any used car I would still want a PPI or inspection
by a trusted party.
It’s definitely a cachet sort of thing, but becoming less and less of one since
BaT was sold off by the founders and it’s starting to get “whored” by the new
owners - weekend auctions, much higher number of cars per day, etc., etc. At
some point the train is going to go off the rails and crash, no telling when or
how spectacularly.
I don’t think I would buy a car there, not because I don’t think I could find a
good one, but mainly because I think the prices there are inflated simply
because it’s BaT. There are occasional “deals”, but they’re pretty rare.
