I think the worst part will be getting the RTV out of the intake manifold
holes.

If you pull the intake manifold to do that, replace all the o-rings in the
fuel system connections between the IP and the fuel filter holder "while
you are there" so none of that will be an issue for another 100k miles or
so. Be prepared to find brittle fuel hoses as well, standard FLAPS should
be fine for that.

Yes, but it’s plumbed to a hose that goes to the pretty “coffee can”.

This shouldn’t be too bad to sort out. I did notice that there’s an
area behind the flying saucer towards the firewall that has a bunch of
red RTV on it. I’ll spend some time looking more closely at it in a
little bit when I start the oil extractor.

Isn't that supposed to go back into the crankcase or the air intake?

Re: [MBZ] E300D Arrives!

2017-05-12 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I think the worst part will be getting the RTV out of the intake manifold
holes.

If you pull the intake manifold to do that, replace all the o-rings in the
fuel system connections between the IP and the fuel filter holder "while
you are there" so none of that will be an issue for another 100k miles or
so. Be prepared to find brittle fuel hoses as well, standard FLAPS should
be fine for that.

Re: [MBZ] E300D Arrives!

2017-05-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yes, but it’s plumbed to a hose that goes to the pretty “coffee can”.

This shouldn’t be too bad to sort out. I did notice that there’s an area
behind the flying saucer towards the firewall that has a bunch of red RTV on
it. I’ll spend some time looking more closely at it in a little bit when I
start the oil extractor.

2017-05-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That would be great, Max. Most of the breather tubes between the cylinders on
the intake are still there, just plugged with rubber caps. I’ll probably have
to replace maybe 25% of the piping from what I can see.

The part I wasn’t sure about is how they’re collected and routed to the flying
saucer valve. That’s where a picture will come in very handy.

Thanks!

By "Under the plastic covering" I mean the covering on the top of the valve
cover, under the cross-over pipe, that covers up all the injectors and fuel
lines.

Re: [MBZ] E300D Arrives!

2017-05-12 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Dan,

Under the plastic covering, a hole up through the valve cover is supposed
to go into a black flying saucer valve.

The output from that valve splits out into an "octopus" with twelve legs,
each of which feeds into one of the intake manifold holes (that are plugged
with RTV).

It really sounds to me like someone got lazy, didn't want to order new
parts from the dealer, and so routed the output from that black flying
saucer valve to the "coffee can".

I'll bet if you order all the new parts, you can put it back to factory
spec with no issues. The painful part will be figuring out the part
numbers for what you are missing, and then getting that RTV out of the
intake manifold holes.

I can try to take some pix of mine later.

Someone has clearly savaged the breather system, if you look at the cylinder
head near the intake where all the little black plastic breather lines are you
can see where some have been removed and others capped off. The holes in the
intake have been plugged with high temperature RTV upon close inspection.

My question to the OM606 people out there - where do these little black plastic
tubes/lines go to? I looked at an EPC drawing and it’s not clear. It would be
nice to find a picture of an intact engine so I could tell what’s missing and
what needs to be replaced. Because it is going to be returned to stock
condition.
