I ordered recently from FCP but they never shared tracking info other than
"expect by Wednesday". Despite this, the package arrived on Tuesday. I
forgave them.

[MBZ] FCPEuro sale

2022-11-27 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
They have some stuff marked down 20-30% for extended "Black Friday"
promo, I just ordered trans filter kits for various vehicles and they
were marked down, got decent prices and free shipping.  I had ordered
some Valvoline MaxLife fluid from Advance Auto as they had the best
prices, which fits the various cars so will be doing trans fluid changes
here soon.

3-day lead times?  What's that about?  So even if you pay for expedited
shipping (which I didn't do because I figured it would be here end of
this week, which it now will with 2-day shipping they did) that won't
happen for 3 days?

That is unusual for them. Usually, stuff goes out the next day, at least that’s

Ordered crankshaft position sensor for the SL500 this morning from Amazon.
Couple bucks more than FCP but it will be here tomorrow.

I just put in an order, about $130 worth so qualified for the free
shipping. That option predicts a delivery of 19 July, would be nice to get
it around 12 July instead. Bunch of glow plugs and intake gasket and some
other bobs and bits. Not in a big hurry to get to that job, so doesn't
really matter how fast the order gets here.

I ordered some oil for Angie's car the week before last hoping to change it
the weekend before last. FCPEuro was the cheapest but I figured it'd take

Yeah I ordered the $13 fill tool from FCP too, they had a $20 discount
code or something on the amount of stuff I was getting, it was like $9
on Amazon, I figured to get all the stuff in one box would be easier
than dealing with the Amazon idiots who can't find my driveway.  Fedex
is supposedly bringing it all today sometime.

This tube just screws into the drain hole and you put your fill hose on
it then pump up through it.  You could probably make one with hardware
store parts, whatever might fit in the drain hole then a barb fitting or
something but for $9 or $13 it's not worth the bother.

Anecdote: Thursday an Amazon driver brought something, this young woman
who looked like a macaw with bright green hair and various facial
hardware.  She has been here before, and is nice.  I told her that she
found me but her colleague couldn't the other day.  She says oh yeah he
called me a coupla times trying to find your driveway.  I guess he gave
up on her and he had called me 2X too...

And then you have the adapter that fits in the tube that you have to use to
pump fluid into it?

I’m surprised the DAS wouldn’t give you fluid level like it does for engine oil.

It’s probably been forever that the fluid has been changed. Apparently the

based on that (and how would he know it’s low, there’s no dipstick) then do a
drain/flush (through the cooler lines) then refill. Yes you need a pump and
tool to fill from the bottom and a scanner to get the temp up to 45C (I think)
and watch that, then add or drain fluid until it doesn’t drip out the
drain/fill hole.

There’s a whole procedure, not hard but more involved than the 722.6, will take
9-10L to do it all with the cooler flush. Youtubers abound.

The kit has 7L, I ordered another 5L jug so should be enough for both.

You KNOW it wasn't the engineers that came up with that idea. That change,
"Eliminate the dipstick and fill tube." has Management written all over it.

I've experienced this myself, some years ago now, regarding diagnostic LED's
that were visible through the cooling grille on the side of a computer. Big
'cost
saving' measure to eliminate 25 cents worth of LED's. Times the thousands of
units of our total production, this no doubt 'saved' enough to buy their
celebratory
lunch --- at McDonalds! And, wiped out instantly by the cost of ONE service
callout
that could have been avoided by having the customer look at the LED's and report
back over the phone.

I ordered 2 transmission service kits for the $900E500 and $1200ML500 Thursday
evening. Selected the free shipping option that said it would be here next
Friday. Ok fine. 2-day shipping was a lot.

Got messages this morning it’s on a fedex truck for delivery today, shipped out
of Milford CT yesterday. Free 2-day shipping, almost as good as Amazon Prime
which delivered a fluid pump yesterday evening late after ordering it Thursday
too.

Learnings: Don’t pay for expedited shipping.

Looks like I can try to get the $1200ML500 sorted tomorrow, see if I can get it
transmitting properly. The E I gotta send off for a new conductor plate ($$$)
and get that running.

If the ML works that’s a quick flip as I don’t particularly care for it. Even
if not I’ll try to unload it. The E is very nice and entertaining to drive
though a quite boring color combo, so I might enjoy it for a little while and
pretend to be a boring old white man. Maybe I should break out some black knee
socks and sandals.

Re: [MBZ] FCPEuro say the 211 is one of the best 5 best used euro cars to buy cheap

2020-12-21 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I looked at the cost of rebuilt air units (or maybe they were new
aftermarket, I forget) and a set of 4 was like $1500 I think. This was
for the E500 that had the offroad adventure.  Then some time to swap
them, which apparently is not too hard.  I suppose it would be worth it
for a decent car to keep it on the road after say 15 years, a hell of a
lot cheaper than buying a new car.

I was surprised by that, too. You could also say that they skipped the “Black
Death” on the diesels as well.

I just can’t fathom the Audi. They are all well known to be a major POS during

yeah I got to the part about engine-out maintenance for something, and
replacing a plastic line on the back of the engine that was prone to
breaking and leaking, could only be accessed with the engine out.  wtf.
U, no thanks.  Aside from the brakes SBC issue on the 211 (warranty
covered) there wasn't a lot of issues, except maybe with the airmatics
on the V8s which is a problem waiting to happen.  I've seen a few posted
with blown air suspension, the seller is still asking stupid money for
them as the car is otherwise quite nice

FCP does drop ship from distribution warehouses all over the country for some
parts. I just got some Lemförder M112 motor mounts and transmission mount and
they came next day from warehouse in Miami. And that was with my free shipping.

I would agree that FCP does not have the granular selection of parts that some
other suppliers have. Not sure what that’s about.
