2017-12-22 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Indeed:

Nash Motors negotiated with several European companies. On October 5, 1952,
they announced that they had selected the Austin Motor Company
 (by then part of BMC
) and Fisher &
Ludlow (which also became
part of BMC in September 1953, later operating under the name Pressed Steel
Fisher), both English companies based in Birmingham, England
 and vicinity. Fisher &
Ludlow would produce the bodywork, while the mechanicals would be provided,
as well as final assembly undertaken, by the Austin Motor Company. This was
the first time an American-designed car, to be exclusively marketed in
North America, had been entirely built in Europe
. It became a captive import
 – a foreign-built vehicle
sold and serviced by Nash (and later by American Motors) through its dealer
distribution system. It is believed that the first pre-production prototype
was completed by Austin on December 2, 1952. In all, five pre-production
prototypes were built by Austin Motors and tested prior to the start of
production. The total tooling cost amounted to US$1,018,475.94, (Austin:
US$197,849.14; Fisher & Ludlow: US$820,626.80) which was a fraction of the
tooling cost for a totally U.S.-built vehicle.

Quite possibly the worst car ever manufactured in the USA. Moreover, it has
been tastelessly updated with Honda seats and a modern sound system.

What door glass? Same as the MGA - on exterior handles and no door glass -
clamped on side curtains kept some of the wind/rain out some of the time.
You reached in and pulled a cable inside the door pocket to release the
door latch to open it, if you didn't just jump over the door to sit down.

2017-12-22 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I was given a Vega that had been abandoned at a gas station with a blown
head gasket, title in the glove box, signed and notarized.

Drove it home, only stopped 4 times in 10 blocks to add water..
Found a local machine shop that was boring out Vega blocks and replacing
the cylinders with flange sleeves then decking the block flat. They sold me
a short block for $250. The cast iron head, pan, and front cover etc all
were reused.

The problem with was the silicone aluminum block bolted to the cast iron
head. Quickly, it set up dis-similar metals corrosion which eroded the
softer aluminum block at the head gasket. Flange sleeve insert cured that
problem..

The Vega was fine so long as it was not overheated. You folks down south
had more engine issues than we did in the GWN. I had a 74 and had no
engine issues. The body was not quite so good however. That was the era
when GM used recycled steel. I had holes in both front fenders in 18
months. To their credit, they did replace both fenders for me.
I paid $2450 for a new car and sold it about 3 years later for $1450.
So, $330 a year in depreciation on a new car was not bad in hindsight.

been tastelessly updated with Honda seats and a modern sound system.

Why??

Dan needs to bring it back to its original glory, then sell it for
5 figures at least.
