Re: [MBZ] German speed limits

2007-03-15 Thread Hendrik Riessen
Ahh so they have imposed speed limits? I knew that there are speed limits
which are regulated according to traffic conditions.
I was there in 97 and did round about 200 in a friends Beemer and did not
see any speed restrictions. I also saw a TV program in which some person was
doing 300 in a turbo buzz box, to him it seemed quite routine.
As a side note, they have now imposed speed limits in the northern
territory. Although when it was an open speed limit they could still charge
you for dangerous driving.
It was a tad crazy up there, open speed limit on a standard single lane
highway with livestock, native animals and Aboriginals on the road, not to
mention three trailer road trains doing 80kmh. That and they like a drink up
there as well.

Now the maximum is 140 compared to 110 in South Australia.

When and where can you go 300 kmh? The only true no speedlimit I
have seen was in Italy on some of the toll Autostradas some 10 years
ago.

One of the old granny tales. We drive faster on the Interstates here
than the Krauts do on the Autobahn.
And every little village along the roadside has Lärm Kontroll Gebiet
(noice control area).

Speaking of which...
I took my GPS on the train with me a couple months ago, clocked the Acella
Express at 148mph.
I knew it was quick but I didn't realize how quick.

Aaah come on now, people have to have dreams and going really fast on
an
autobahn is amongst those dreams for some.
Personally I prefer to catch the train and sit back with a few beers.

Que?
All the cell phones I've ever had automatically set the time.
Thats 2 Motorolas, 1 on Nextel and one (the current one that did update Sunday
morning) on Verizon plus my wife's 2 Nokias on Cingular.

Dad and I made fun of his friend Eric for having the crappiest cellphone either
of us had ever seen since it had to be programmed for the time and date.

In a prepaid I guess I wouldn't expect a whole lot but in a subscription
situation

*228 is for CDMA phones like Verizon, Alltel, Sprint, Nextel, etc.
It probably won't do anything for GSM phones from T-Mobile or
Cingular/ATT.

I was interested to hear that T-Mo and Cinguar have a way to send the
time
to the phones, my prepaid phone is served through Cingular and I have
to tell
it the date and time. But it did know enough to clear the date/time and
make
me reset it yesterday when I turned it on.

The Germans are coming under pressure from the EU to set speed limits on
the Autobahn to combat greenhouse gas and HC emissions...

This morning's paper says that this crackpot idea by a Greek EU commissioner
has been rejected. It was pointed out to him that he should look at pollution
in his own country before worrying about Germany.

I personally couldn't care less if there were a speed limit on the
Autobahn. Besides, don't underestimate the power of the EU bureaucracy.
Once they get going the momentum is unstoppable.
