I thought the same thing. ... This is one big-a** powerful snowblower.

What they do up town (where I work) is wind-row the snow into the middle
of the street to open the lanes. You know what that makes, don't you? Big
chunks of compacted snow and ice. The next day, they bring this
snowblower/truck along to snatch up this frozen mess and dump it onto trucks
to cart away.

Wouldn't even burp if it snatched up a human body.

Where's OSHA when you need 'em?

You make a great case for moving from MD into D.C., which has a more
responsive DMV. I did so in 1999.

Yep, that we do, but if you have a bill of sale they will go with that
 (or
$500, whatever is lower) for tax value. Being held up depends upon the
inspector. Usually they do try on headlamp aim, but I have the older
hoppy garage type aimers-- good for anything with the three glass nubs
  on the lens...

The inspectors are licensed by the state and if they do anything too
 hinky
you can go to the MSP on them...

BTW last time I got a car inspected it was at a stealership
 (deliberately)
and they found that the sway bar bushings were shot as was the engine
mounts. Given the car developed a nasty vibe to it when in gear with
 the
brakes on (right on the way to the inspection, augh!) I knew about the
mounts. I didn't know that the bushings got bad (I thought all 210 front
ends rattled a bit on low speed bumpy roads)... Anyhow, the sway bar
 links
practically fell apart when I disassembled things! ... Oh yeah, they
mentioned the rear brakes would pass but only had about 3kmi left on
them.. I replaced them for good measure.

Time before that was at a local gas station, and I saw a note for
 headlamp
aim (that was scratched out!) and that the high-beam indicator was not
working. Sure enough the thing had wiggled out of the socket. I popped
 it
back in and the guy looked and passed it on the spot. I guess I am
 pretty
  lucky.

Re: [MBZ] Hey, LT Don, are you OK up there?

2007-03-02 Thread Loren Faeth

LT Don is NEVER OK! Just ask hin!!

I got home Wed night in the predictions of freezing rain and snow. I was
lucky to get home. All the roads are pretty much shut down while the wind
howls. If an ambulance is needed out of town, it goes behind a
snowplow. The national Guard is rescuing those foolish enough to try to
travel yesterday. All the roads N-S between Polk County (Des Moines) and
Story County (Ames) are closed and impassable, including I-35 and US 69. I
had planned to use yesterday to cut up all the downed limbs from the storm
last weekend, but I decided to wait until after this storm.

This is very much like the April 22 Blizzard in 1973 except that one
hammered eastern Iowa and this one hammered western Iowa. the really deep
stuff is from Omaha to just west of Des Moines. After that one, I drove
across I-80 in my Black 200D through a channel cut in the snow. Most of
the drifts were 15-25 feet high. It was truly amazing.

This is just a reminder of the insignificance of human endeavors and why
the term blizzard was invented here.

I am still waiting for global warming to occur, so we can have a tropical
climate here like we had a few geological ages ago.

This wind is supposed to let up this afternoon and I will start to shovel
out then.

It sounds like all the people on the interstates have been rescued as of
about noon today. They are now concentrating on the two lanes to find
people stranded and bring them into some shelter.

A good share of the ice from last weekend has melted/cracked and fallen off
the trees in Ames.

Have been listening to the scanner and watching History Channel. They've had

They said on the radio the drill for getting people out of the interstate
right of way was a blower truck, a regular plow and a string of National
Guard humvees following. When they found anyone, they'd leave a couple of
humvees to do the dig and pick while the convoy went on. The straggler
humvees would catch up when they had the people and rejoin the
convoy. When all the seats were full, they would head to the nearest
