Re: [MBZ] Hey Andrew!

2017-09-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I am seriously looking for one as a daily driver. I love the one I bought for
the youngest son. A wagon would be icing on the cake.

The guy in Amarillo with the 2002 4Matic offered it to me for $2700 last night.
(Kaleb has seen pictures of this car, it's nice, too.

Re: [MBZ] Hey Andrew!

2017-05-04 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Ouch!

As I have stated previously, I learned my lesson years ago when I bought a 1971
VW Beetle convertible for $400 that became a "finish it or lose your ass"
project that cost me easily $10k. I figured it would cost me half that, which
I was prepared for. What I wasn't prepared for were the subcontracted costs
that I couldn't stop once the process began that went out of control.

At that time I was at a point of no return. To stop would have meant trying to
sell a partially restored car, a near impossibility with a huge loss. I had no
choice but to continue. Understand that this predated the Internet as we know
it today - this was the late 1980s, early 90s. No eBay or BAT to sell the car
to a highly focused group of enthusiasts.

Ever since that occurred I have always bought the very best example of the car
I could afford. It's far, far cheaper in the long run, believe me.

As for Kaleb's back forty, I just think he's a hoarder and his item of choice
is old Mercedes..

These are valid questions, for sure. I assume you can go to the next bidder in
line.

I have to believe that BAT would ban anyone who knowingly backs out of a
transaction, but I don't know that for a fact. They make it very clear in their
terms that their involvement is strictly the providing of an auction venue and
the process itself, and that they have nothing to do with the actual
transaction.

I also suspect that there would be some form of public shaming if such an issue
came up. It's a pretty tight community, and there are a lot of users whose

but I suspect it would somehow.

BAT has no relationship with buyer or seller as far as the transaction. It's

2014 will be coming off lease next. The terms are usually 36 month now.
Helped my sister get a replacement for her 98 Volvo. Newest returns were the
2013 being offered CPO.From what we saw, I am not sure what makes it CPO v.
standard returns. Must be a cumulative brownie point total because some of the
cars had not seen the detail shop before hitting the floor, others were missing
parts. Even the pricing was all over the place. No matter the condition, they
all hung around NADA and no way to negotiate a better price. I tried to walk
out, but sister was too desperate.

We are a Generac service dealer. You can buy them online for less than we sell
them for, but forget about any kind of support if you do that.

We can usually install one of these in a day or less. The documentation is
good, so someone with a decent DIY background can do it without too much
effort. The only sketchy part is the (re)wiring that has to be done to your
distribution system, although in many cases it's not that big of a deal.

Re: [MBZ] Hey Andrew

2010-02-11 Thread Scott Ritchey
Let me elaborate on my fuel concern. You will probably burn 1-3 gal per
hour (of gas, diesel, or LP) so you'll need hundreds of gallons on hand at
the beginning of the emergency because you probably won't be able to get
fuel once the emergency is underway. Lugging hundreds of gallons in jerry
cans is the pits. Having hundreds of gallons of gasoline go stale is the
pits (although maybe you can rotate stock by burning it in your cars). The
diesel problem is similar but it's easier (in some places) to get hundreds
of gallons of home heating oil delivered to your house (use a GOOD filter in
that case) but heating oil is illegal to burn in your cars. But you can
store LP indefinitely, especially if you use it for other things (fireplace,
stove, BBQ grill) and gas companies deliver to your tank (and you need a
tank too big to carry for a generator). Finally, NG is simplicity itself and
you don't even need to pay for it until you use it. With LP or NG, you can
use a BBQ hookup to run a small generator.

Generac (aka Guardian, Centurion) makes a variety of permanent installed
automatic standby generator systems (complete kit) that require no human
intervention other than changing the oil and filters and checking the
battery; but they are in the $2-5K range. Northern Tool (and certainly
others) sells portable generators that run on propane and are lower cost
(like $400 for 3KW) but you need to manually start the generator and
switchover to generator power. A final comment: don't get a generator bigger
than you need; it just burns more fuel.

IMO all of these generators are too noisy to consider running inside ...
even if you solve the exhaust issue.

On a related note, ventless gas logs (LP or NG) put out a LOT of heat and
are easy to install in a wood-burning fireplace (you run with damper
closed). The advantage is you don't need to stockpile wood and you don't
have all the debris from hauling wood through the house. But these ventless
setups do produce some soot so I wouldn't recommend ventless for everyday
use. In my old house I have a direct vent fireplace in the family room for
everyday use and ventless gas logs in the dining room (in an old woodburning
fireplace) in case I really need more heat. The direct vent looks like a
real wood fire but the ventless looks more like a gas stove (blue flame) so
it's more for function than looks.

Maybe this helps.

Natural gas (or propane) is the way to go IMO. The fuel doesn't go bad and
the carb doesn't gum up. And with Natural gas there's no storage problem (I
have a 500 gal underground propane tank). The downside is you need a more
costly generator that's set up for LP on NG. My neighbor in FL had a 40KW
NG generator that fed the neighborhood after several hurricanes.

Diesel may be more efficient but there are the fuel issues (transportation,
storage, shelf life).

What he said. And if you're really paranoid, you can set one up for dual fuel
(NG & LP) easily and for little additional cost.

The likelihood of your NG supply failing is very, very low. The few areas that
require dual fuel setups by law are places like California, where the
possibility of interruption is present from things like earthquakes.

The only real disadvantage with NG is that it is lower in BTU content than
gasoline or LP, therefore, the generator output is slightly lower on NG.

I was just talking with my partners, and they mentioned that if we sell 10 or
more units at a time we get a pretty good discount...

The Amish are allowed to use internal combustion engines for various things - I
used to sell them engines years ago in northern Indiana, where there is a large
Amish community. The typical setup was an engine used to run a jackshaft
through a building. The jackshaft had numerous pulleys on it that used leather
belts to run machinery, like woodworking equipment, for example.

No generators, no electricity, no pumps, etc. I think they were only allowed
to use them for work related stuff.

Good customers. Always fed you when you visited and paid in cash.

You could do it, but why would you have the generator inside the house in the
first place? That's pretty darned dangerous in a lot of ways.

2010-02-10 Thread Scott Ritchey
Natural gas (or propane) is the way to go IMO. The fuel doesn't go bad and
the carb doesn't gum up. And with Natural gas there's no storage problem (I
have a 500 gal underground propane tank). The downside is you need a more
costly generator that's set up for LP on NG. My neighbor in FL had a 40KW
NG generator that fed the neighborhood after several hurricanes.

Diesel may be more efficient but there are the fuel issues (transportation,
storage, shelf life).

You could run the exhaust pipe inside and have it heat the house, but you
would not want to terminate it in the flue; the flue isn't designed for
that kind of thing. You would want to make sure none of the exhaust has
any (or should I say, ANY) possibility of coming inside the house.

Bonus, you could always go sit in the nice warm car!

Being a Diesel, you can even sleep in the nice warm car with no fear
of CO., but you should pipe the exhaust outside.

I like the inverter idea, I wonder how much power Andrew needs? You
could leave the diesel Benz idling while plugging the inverter into that
car and the furnace into the inverter, but you may need too much power
for the start draw from the furnace blower (assuming gas furnace).

That's about what we had up here (Baltimore). We got 20.5 from the one
that just ended. We got 28 from the weekend one. It's well above my
three year old's eyeballs. I don't remember the previous two. I
think our season totals are close to 80 inches!

We have not seen a city snow plow make it past our house since Friday
night. We have gone out and dug a couple of them out, though. We
hand dug some of our street (i put in at least 13 hours snow removal
since saturday...) and all the benzes (2 99 e300's and an 85 300d)
fired right up once they were cleared. The one e300 did okay in the
snow when we got out and went to BJ's to fill the trunk (ice melter,
cat litter, cat food, paper products...), and I did okay backing all
the way into my spot...

With the travel ban "phase 3 snow emergency" in place, we just sit
here...

BTW, can anyone spare some global warming to send our way?

She is right - our utilities in Florida were underground, and despite all
the hurricane related outages a few years ago ours never even blinked.

As for a generator, it's not a bad idea - some of the smaller home standby
units we sell are quite affordable, especially when you consider the
inconvenience of being out of power. If you have questions along these
lines drop me a note off list.

I have a 25kW natural gas unit at my house and have yet to have a major
outage since I installed it. We had an interrupter blow at a local
substation a few months ago, but we were only out for 45 minutes. It was
fun coming home to a lit house when everyone else was dark, however. Lots
of questions from the neighbors after that

Power outages in the winter are quite
rare in DC, so we had no backup plan
- no generator or even firewood for our fireplace.
The power went out at
6:45 AM Saturday during the onslaught of heavy, wet snow,
when the house
temp. was approx. 62 degrees. Throughout the day, the
outside temp. dropped
during the snowstorm. By 8 pm the inside temp was
down to 54 while it was
19 F. outside. We debated checking into a hotel,
because the power company
(Pepco) was warning of a "multiple day event", meaning
there was no
assurance we would get our electricity back anytime
soon. We finally
decided to bundle up and stay put, which turned out to be a
brilliant
decision because the power came back on at 10:10 pm.
Howls of joy ensued.

Today there is another likelihood of more widespread
outages due to high
winds, coupled with the additional 10" (25 cm) of
snow. Unfortunately, all
the stores are closed so I can't go out and buy
firewood. This time,
however, my Winnipeg BIL told us to ratchet up the
thermostat to 68 so there
will be more residual house heat should the lines go down
again...

We are considering getting a gas powered generator, or
converting our
fireplace to natural gas, as a result of this experience.

Donna is forever - and rightfully - complaining that if our
power lines were
BURIED (like in Winnipeg) we wouldn't have to worry about
freezing in the
dark.

true "win-win" because it saves them hauling to the dump.

I have seen them in a local store. Chinese stuff I suppose but it looked
reasonably well put together. Check out
some of the Farm & Fleet or similar stores down your way or maybe Grizzley or

A guy I know was telling me about some Amish people he knew, they had a
diesel engine for something (they will use diesel engines directly but
not generate electricity with them for reasons that are not clear to me)
and ran the radiator into the house to warm it. So I'm thinking you
could get your diesel car, do a bypass on the radiator, hook a gen head
to the crank pulley with a long belt and the gen on a wheeled cart that
would roll right over the engine, like a hospital bed table, and you
would be good to go as long as you had diesel.

Power outages in the winter are quite
rare in DC, so we had no backup plan
- no generator or even firewood for our fireplace.
The power went out at
6:45 AM Saturday during the onslaught of heavy, wet snow,
when the house
temp. was approx. 62 degrees. Throughout the day, the
outside temp. dropped
during the snowstorm. By 8 pm the inside temp was
down to 54 while it was
19 F. outside. We debated checking into a hotel,
because the power company
(Pepco) was warning of a "multiple day event", meaning
there was no
assurance we would get our electricity back anytime
soon. We finally
decided to bundle up and stay put, which turned out to be a
brilliant
decision because the power came back on at 10:10 pm.
Howls of joy ensued.

Today there is another likelihood of more widespread
outages due to high
winds, coupled with the additional 10" (25 cm) of
snow. Unfortunately, all
the stores are closed so I can't go out and buy
firewood. This time,
however, my Winnipeg BIL told us to ratchet up the
thermostat to 68 so there
will be more residual house heat should the lines go down
again...

We are considering getting a gas powered generator, or
converting our
fireplace to natural gas, as a result of this experience.

Donna is forever - and rightfully - complaining that if our
power lines were
BURIED (like in Winnipeg) we wouldn't have to worry about
freezing in the
dark.

Before I was sidelined with chest pain I was doing pretty well putting firewood

That would be the ideal, though I think they are kinda pricey for no
more than you might use it.  A small gasoline generator with a few 5gal
cans of gas in the garage (cycle them so they don't get funky) would
serve to crank up your heat occasionally to keep the house bearable.
Though with the global warming you are experiencing power outages might
be more frequent in the future and the natgas would be a better choice.
Whoever our list colleague is who sells gensets should establish a
presence in DC, you could be his agent and probably make a killing
starting next week.

My niece in Alexandria didn't get their power back until Sunday night,
it was starting to get quite chilly in their house.  If you have a
fireplace you might want to look at a good woodstove insert, a fireplace
sucks your warm air right up the chimney.  Oh, and buy a chainsaw and go
around to all the trees that have collapsed in the heavy wet snow, load
up your TD... be a manly man.  Let it dry over the summer and you're
good to go.  I collected  a lot of firewood like that when I lived up by
Boston, nor'easters and the neighborhood and town tree dump were my
friend.  I had a woodstove in the kitchen, the last winter we were there
I only spent $500 on oil for the burner over like 5-6 months.

I can power my furnace, a few lights with my 1500w genny.  Not fat
living but is way ahead of nothing!  I wouldn't want much more due to
cost, fuel use {got to lug it around and it's got to be fresh!}, crank
starting etc.
Fireplace is NOT a good heat source!  With the draft it draws, it will
be grossly inefficient when it pumps all the warm air out of the house.
I'm sure guys with 5KW will pipe in, different strokes for different

Wow, nice prices. I think I would have to pay double that here.

If you were in an area where power failed all the time, you might want to go
even deeper into this stuff. Do a
google search and you should come up with a story by a fellow in Florida who
got tired of hurricanes taking out his
power. He got one of the Lister style diesel engines now made in India and
hooked it up to a big generator head. A
nice setup if you need it.

I can give you some ballpark numbers for a couple of nice air cooled automatic
standby systems:

8kW natural gas with 100A automatic transfer switch - around $2400

13kW with same - around $3900

These can be set up for LP as well if you don't have natural gas.

That's with shipping, no installation, but unlimited customer and technical
support.

If you have done any sort of house wiring and/or plumbing you can install one.
It's really quite simple.

I have two sump pumps in my basement that absolutely cannot fail. One can
handle things unless there are
torrential downpours for hours, but without electricity it would be a matter of
minutes before my basement would be
afloat.

With a standby generator installed, I am comfortable leaving on vacations and
the like, as I know that I won't come
home to a flooded basement. The additional privilege of having power during an
outage for the rest of the house is
icing on the cake.

The size of my generator is such that there is little I can't run when we're
off-grid, but that's the exception for
most. Being in the "business" has allowed me to get a much larger unit than I
could otherwise afford

2010-02-10 Thread R A Bennell
I am chiming in late but I agree - good but expensive. If you look at places
like Lowes they likely sell a setup
that is installed in a box outside - wired into the sytem and automatic so you
won't even know the power is off in
some cases. Cost will be like $10K. Given you are in the city you probably need
less than that. Wait until summer
when no one remembers the snowstorm and buy a used one off of Kijiji or
something such and then keep it tuned up so
it will run when you need it.

There are diesel ones available too so that would even be better than gasoline
given your diesel cars. You could
siphon the fuel out of the cars if need be and that would be enough to keep you
going for a bit with small
generator.

Natural gas would be nice but you could also consider one fired by propane.
Propane stored in tanks in your garage
would not get old like gasoline.

In regards to the fireplace - I would get a wood insert for the fireplace.
Then you can power the blower with your new gas generator. This would be
the lowest cost way to be sure you would have an uninterrupted heat source.

Re: [MBZ] Hey Andrew

2010-02-10 Thread LWB250
I can give you some ballpark numbers for a couple of nice air cooled automatic
standby systems:

8kW natural gas with 100A automatic transfer switch - around $2400

13kW with same - around $3900

These can be set up for LP as well if you don't have natural gas.

That's with shipping, no installation, but unlimited customer and technical
support.

If you have done any sort of house wiring and/or plumbing you can install one.
It's really quite simple.

I have two sump pumps in my basement that absolutely cannot fail. One can
handle things unless there are torrential downpours for hours, but without
electricity it would be a matter of minutes before my basement would be afloat.

With a standby generator installed, I am comfortable leaving on vacations and
the like, as I know that I won't come home to a flooded basement. The
additional privilege of having power during an outage for the rest of the house
is icing on the cake.

The size of my generator is such that there is little I can't run when we're
off-grid, but that's the exception for most. Being in the "business" has
allowed me to get a much larger unit than I could otherwise afford

She is right - our utilities in Florida were underground, and despite all the
hurricane related outages a few years ago ours never even blinked.

As for a generator, it's not a bad idea - some of the smaller home standby
units we sell are quite affordable, especially when you consider the
inconvenience of being out of power. If you have questions along these lines
drop me a note off list.

I have a 25kW natural gas unit at my house and have yet to have a major outage
since I installed it. We had an interrupter blow at a local substation a few
months ago, but we were only out for 45 minutes. It was fun coming home to a
lit house when everyone else was dark, however. Lots of questions from the
neighbors after that

Shame on you for being unprepared...

I doubt she'd be so excited if the power company came and said "We're going to
bury your power lines so you don't have another outage, your share of the cost
is $5000."

Power outages in the winter are quite rare in DC, so we had  no backup plan
- no generator or even firewood for our fireplace.  The power went out at
6:45 AM Saturday during the onslaught of heavy, wet snow, when the house
temp. was approx. 62 degrees.  Throughout the day, the outside temp. dropped
during the snowstorm.  By 8 pm the inside temp was down to 54 while it was
19 F. outside.  We debated checking into a hotel, because the power company
(Pepco) was warning of a "multiple day event", meaning there was no
assurance we  would get our electricity back anytime soon.  We finally
decided to bundle up and stay put, which turned out to be a brilliant
decision because the power came back on at 10:10 pm.  Howls of joy ensued.

Today there is another likelihood of more widespread outages due to high
winds, coupled with the additional 10" (25 cm) of snow.  Unfortunately, all
the stores are closed so I can't go out and buy firewood.  This time,
however, my Winnipeg BIL told us to ratchet up the thermostat to 68 so there
will be more residual house heat should the lines go down again...

We are considering getting a gas powered generator, or converting our
fireplace to natural gas, as a result of this experience.

Donna is forever - and rightfully - complaining that if our power lines were
BURIED (like in Winnipeg) we wouldn't have to worry about freezing in the
dark.

I like it, but such a beast might be more expensive than a gasoline
powered generator to purchase, and you may have to pay a fee to someone
for installation. It would be an elegant engineering solution though,
with no need to re-fuel. If you had an electrician wire in the
connection so you only had emergency power for the furnace and maybe
some lights and the microwave, you'd be in business with maybe only a
3kw or 5kw generator.

It doesn't take much to run a furnace. One of those little 1000w

Before he got the standby generator, my dad put an outlet in the power
line to the central heat boiler, brought in the batteries out of his
boats, and backfed the outlet with an inverter hooked up to all the
marine batteries. I suspect you've got a few group 49 batteries on hand.
If you backfeed any part of the electrical wiring, you must isolate it
by turning off the breaker or removing the fuse.

Re: [MBZ] Hey Andrew

2010-02-10 Thread R A Bennell
Only some of the power lines are buried here, mostly in the newer areas. Power
still has to get here from the north
and be distributed about and that is pretty well all overhead stuff.

We rarely suffer outages of any duration - more often a blink of the lights and
we are back up. However, the
thought still crosses my mind that we might be in tough shape if the power was
out for long in the cold times so I
bought the little generator. I have recently been looking at a bigger but older
one that runs on propane but the
fellow who wishes to sell it has never personally had it running or seen it
running so I am not sure I want it. It
is also a couple of hundred miles away so not easy to go have a look at, esp
this time of year. It is only 10Kw and
my existing one is 7.5Kw so not a huge increase in power. The bigger one is not
portable unless one makes some sort
of cart for it. Don't know if that is important but I might want to use it at
the lake or some such as well.

What sort of heat does your home have? Gas by the sounds of it.

Got to go for now.

Donna is forever - and rightfully - complaining that if our power lines were
BURIED (like in Winnipeg) we wouldn't have to worry about freezing in the
dark.

I'm sure guys with 5KW will pipe in, different strokes for different
folks.. I'm very happy to just exist for a few days every couple of years.

YMMV

Hi Randy,

Thanks for asking - I thought nobody cared.

Last Saturday's storm was a record breaker - we had 26" in the back yard
and lost power for a day. Work was canceled Monday and Tuesday. :)

We are now in the grip of the blizzard of '10 part deux that started last
night. Temperatures are in the low 20s, howling winds, and another foot to
accumulate before it's all over. Whistler BC should be so lucky! I've
lived in DC since 1975 and this is by far the snowiest AND coldest winter
of
all time. We normally get a warming trend after a snowstorm like this, but
temperatures are not going to rise much above freezing over the next 5
days.

We've had FOUR consecutive snow storms with accumulation:

Saturday, Jan. 30: 6"
Tuesday, Feb. 2:4"
Friday/Saturday, Feb 5-6: 25"
Tuesday/Wednesday, Feb. 9- 10: 10" (still snowing)

This is a very big deal for D.C.

Benz content: I drove the 83 300TD in the snow last night and it handled
great!

Firewood comes from stores?
Anybody on Craigslist or in the WaPost offering delivered wood for sale?
Do you have room in the garage to stack a 4'x8'x16" rick of wood, or half of

It doesn't take much to run a furnace. One of those little 1000w 2-stroke
generators can do it if the furnace is 110v. I see them on sale for $90-100 on
occasion.
